Looking for a bit of advice here. The access is very tight to the front of the engine so I can't actually see how it works.

Looks like a socket head screw on an eccentric cam. I guess I need to slacken off something before adjusting?

Not sure if it's the same but on the kads it's 2 Allen keys. One to loosen the securing bolt and one to twist the cam to tighten it.

Hi Falling Star

There is a specific tension (or torque on later models) for the belt and a specific method for tensioning them.

Owners manual should have information on how to do this. Or ask your friendly Volvo Penta dealer.

If you get this wrong it can cause you a pain in the pocket.

On all of my KAD's...

15mm nut to loosen the pulley, 14mm nut to tension the belt. Tension to 40Nm if I recall

OK thanks but I think that must be a later version. Mine just seems to have an Allen screw.
Regret to say I don't have a manual. Boatdiesel.com downloads don't seen to cover this.

I'm still having problems with this. Access is so restricted I'm having to do everything by feel.

Does anyone have a link to a drawing of the layout? Which bolt does what? Cheers.

Sign up for the sealing forum. The manuals are on there.

1 Allen key or 2 on the adjuster? My kads have 1 as the axel and 1 offset to twist the cam to tension it.

Sounds like you need to buy an inspection mirror as well, perhaps.

Yes, I've got a mirror. It just fits in the 1 inch gap between the pulley and the bulkhead ............ Not much use in this instance.

I've seen this diagram too but can't see (or feel) how bolt number 7 is locked. The diagram shows the locknut behind the pulley. Is that right?

The only manuals I've found describe adjusting the pulley with a torque wrench on a domed nut. I think I must have an old design here.

Could always take the engine out to do it I suppose ...........

Hi
If it is the same system as my KAD44 you need 2 allen (socket) keys both same size (cant remember what size at the mo). You loosen the centre one, then use the other allen key to adjust by rotating it, then while holding the adjusting allen key, nip up the centre one to lock it in place. There is a tool you can buy to check the tightness, I have one and it is pants. I adjust mine so I can twist the belt through 90 degrees which seems to be about right. Dont do too tight as it will "do in" the bearings in the clutch or adjusting wheel. I recently had issues with my clutch slipping, the boat yard had it that tight it played a "C" sharp when you pinged it. It was loosened off and all is now ok. Not very descriptive I am afraid but hopefully makes sense. Cheers Paul

Just an update and to say "thank you" to all contributors.

Finally managed to sort it out. Someone in the past had replaced the original mounting with a home-made design so it was very hard to identify the configuration in such a restricted space. Had to use an inspection camera to see how to dismantle it.

Anyway, I've got the correct parts and changed it back to how it should be now, so it will be simple next time.

I recommend this tool http://cpc.farnell.com/duratool/d01422/camera-inspection/dp/TL13077?in_merch=Featured Products

Thanks again.
