Hi all,

I have finally found a shortlis of 2 boats both the same model Aquastar two different lengths.
I like both of them each with their own pros and cons.
It has pretty much come down to engines for choice.
The smaller has TAMD41p units with approx 750 hours (2002) and the other has KAMD300 with 1700hours.

My brain is telling me go with the tamds as they are fully mechanical and less to go wrong.
My heart says the KAMD although I'm slightly worried about ageing electronic issues, and potential big repair bills.

Both boats are running fine so for this thread can assume good service history. But what would be your choices?

Cheers

If you can live with a bit less performance….41’s all day long for the reasons you already mentioned.

I think the “p“ iteration was the best Volvo ever made

It would be the 41’s for me for the reasons stated. The uncertainty with replacement ECU’s would be a factor to consider. If you haven’t seen this it is worth a read.

Hi Greg2, Wow that is a scary issue! I think my decision has now been firmed up on this as I do not have the means to suddenly be able to order 2new lumps. Perhaps it would be wise to wait to pick up a hull with such an issue providing it is priced accordingly.

Both are good engines.

Both are old engines 18 years or so.

Both need looking after, especially the oil cooler.

The 41p is 200hp the KAMD is 300hp with automotive diesel.

What size Aquastar?

A lot of the 38's had 41 to 300's and now the D4/6 Series.

The smaller engines are on a 33 and the 300s on a 38.
I do prefer the 38 two of my friends have them, it's a lot more boat that's for sure!

Admittatly both of theirs are slightly different. One has new d6s fitted (it really goes!)and the other is a newer model with a big single. Both lovely.

I just wouldn't have the immediate funding should the inevitable happen, but it is something that would be budgeted for over a good few years. (You'd be daft not to). I just want to go and enjoy it. Whilst I have the time before purchase, any advice on a potential money pit would be great. Hence this post.

Well I appreciate your input guys but going to go with the smaller one. I figure, I can enjoy this one, look after it of course and perhaps eventually move on up in the future. Still love the 38's.......... One day.

With so few hours in 18 years it would be well worth checking the fuel tanks for signs of bug. Don’t ask how I know this

Already checked and done, tanks are fairly new also and stainless.
Had the same issue on my last boat. Had bug on an ally tank. Got a stainless one made and lost the boat in a fire a few months later. Couldn't write it!

I am thinking about those diesel dipper filter systems I see advertised think it's about 700 a unit. Just to keep things tip top. I am a nerd with cleaning certain things and the way things should be presented. Nothing makes me cringe more than a filthy engine bay and a messy wiring harness / loom layout. It's not hard and should make problems easier to sort when the arise (hopefully)

285hp I believe ?
But take your point a big difference in power compared to an ad41 x 2 engines .
Apparently 285 that’s on marine gas oil, on automotive diesel which is better quality you will get 300hp at WOT. Whereas the D4 and D6 will adjust for the fuel Quality.

I thought red diesel was just white diesel with dye added .

Pretty sure that's how I read it.
Although in Denmark they have a funny type of diesel for marine fuel, it's a bio fuel type. will be interesting to see what the thoughts are when that becomes more mainstream in the UK.
