Hi All,

I have noticed that the S/C is on all the time on my starboard engine and I know that isn’t right.

The Clutch engages when I turn the main engine kill switch on with an audible click. (This is before I even turn the key)

The port engine behaves normally.

What can I swap to diagnose the problem?

Cheers all.

Replacing the clutch and the speed relay is the usual fix.
A new speed relay could be damaged by a faulty clutch coil - see below

Ok that sounds like a good place to start.

Will swap tomorrow and let you know the result.

Weirdly all looks newer on the engine that has the issue. We will see.

Thanks guys.

I perhaps did not explain
If the clutch is faulty if may fry the good speed relay.

The attachment above suggests the following......

Oh I see. Ok. Maybe I won’t do that then. 🤣

Can anyone tell me what the proximity switch is for?

I understand it is triggered by a metal object being close but what is its purpose?

Am I being completely dumb here ?

Aaaah ok.

Seems an overly complicated system but something is making sense now.

I have installed some extra bracing for the engine hatch and I have a metal upright near the throttle linkage.

I imagine that is setting it off.

Who would have thought it?!!!

Will probably replace this upright with a timber or composite piece. .

Will report back.

Thanks old bean.

Ok so that wasn't setting off the proximity switch. Removed the upright and still the S/C engages when I turn on the engine isolator.

Can I swap the proximity switches without fear of frying them?

Is it only the speed control module that is at risk from a dodgy clutch coil?

Thanks guys.

So I have swapped over the proximity switch and the problem still remains.

The clutch AND the speed control relay thing unit are seemingly brand new (very clean) compared to the working engine.

I am going to pull the speed control unit out and have look inside.

Back in a bit.

Ok well that didn’t take long.

Switched off isolator, started to remove speed controller and it felt warm. (Groan) took it off and opened it up and sure enough it is stinky and shows signs of being burnt out.

Will order another one now.

Can anyone tell me then procedure on how to test the clutch voltage please?!

Don't want to fry a new unit.

🥲

I can send you a doc I wrote, but from the sound of it your clutch coil is gone and needs to be replaced otherwise it will damage a new speed relay.

That would be great.

Just as a side note. I removed the speed control relay and started the engine.

She fires up and runs perfectly (minus the S/C obviously) i was thinking about just running a switch to put 12v into the clutch when I want or need the S/C. I know others have done this.

What do you think?

Seems to me the only complicated bit on this engine is causing all the issues.

My thoughts are that I don’t fly around like a loony anyway. I am never at WOT and they are noisy as all hell if you are in the range but not wanting to get over the hump.

Two little switches and I have zero issues and full control.

Does the speed relay thing control anything else?

Hmmmmmm.
