Hi, have a one year old kad32. There always seems to be a build up of belt dust around the engine- does anyone else have this? I have checked all clearances/tensions etc all seem ok. Volvo dealer going to boat next week to do a service, so I will mention t to them as well.

Any comments would be interesting.

I have a kad 300 (6 mths old) and get similar black dust in engine compartment - I read on this forum that this is probably due to one or more pulleys out of alignement although mine isn't enough really to call a 'build-up' so I've just ignored it. I have done 109 hours now and believe the belts get changed next service in any case.

This is pretty normal on most boat engines. In a car, the wind & rain coming thru the rad keeps the dust at bay. In a boat, the engines run in an enclosed enviroment, so you do get dust build up after a while.

Its a Volvo!

As col said, its pretty normal. Being a year old, I can't see that the pulley's will be out of alignment. But then again, worth a check.

My Sealine has twin KAD32s and yes I get the belt dust.

The engines are now 3 years old and have done 300 hours. (250 hours seems to be the "norm" for these belts.) Coming back from Calais last August I had a terrible screaching from the engineroom. Turned out to be a belt slipping (probably the one that drives the power steering pump). To the best of my knowledge the belts had not been changed before then. Not an easy job. Although I carry a full set of spares I left it until the service in September when all four belts on the one engine and three on the other were changed.

Apart from re-tightening them after a few hours they have been OK. Still get the black dust though. Worrying isn't it! But it doesn't seem as bad as when they were new. Odd.

I'm doing a round trip in a couple of weeks to Dunkirk, Dieppe, Honfleur, Carentan, Cherbourg, Southampton, Brighton, Ramsgate, London. I'll let you know how much dust I gather.

Just keep a set of spares handy - plus a large Allen key to get at the adjuster for the big belt.

Surely your belts are changed every year as part of the annual service? Mine were on my KAD32's. Not a particularly difficult job but unpleasant at sea.

Oh yeah, plenty of belt dust.

I believe for cars and trucks, there is a new type of belt available, made from a different material, (silicon or something, maybe not like silicon hoses) which does not dust, can't remember where I read it, but they are available, worth checking.

Re: Thanks...

Thanks to all who responded, I feel more at ease now. I have checked alignment and all is ok, and I keep spare belts aboard as well. Will just have to keep check on the belts and keep cleaning up the dust!!!

Just one other question? It says nothing in the manual about running the engine for extended periods with the supercharger engaged. Does this cause any problems. I figured probably not, as there are supercharged car engines around and the charger must be on/off all the time.

There have been times in heavier conditions where I have had to come off the plane, and running at semi displacement speed engages the supercharger.

Thanks again

Re: Thanks...

On my KAD 32s the turbo kicks in/out about 1800 revs presumably on a centrifugal clutch. I've run several consecutive hours above 1800 rpm and several hours below 1800 rpm especially on the river. (I always give them a quick blast when I think nobody is looking just to keep them working) Never a problem - yet.

I have minimised the dust from my Kad 42's by using "Belt dressing" this spray protects the belt, stops slippage and seems to help re:dust. works for me.
