Hi all,
A friend landed with a new (to him) RIB with a KAD32 - great choice! I offered to give a little once over and share some (little) wisdom I have of these engines.

Some things struck me....
No crankcase breather filter and no fitting for it! See pics below.... Did some KAD32's come without a crankcase breather filter? (All of mine did, but I do not know the year of this engine)

Second thing that struck me, is on the KAD32, there should be a breather hose coming from the top of the rocker, to somewhere?? The hose is missing and I cannot recall for the life of me where it goes to! (It's been a while since i've had a KAD32)

Third thing that struck me (I forgot to take a pic) is that, for the life of me, I could not find the 2 drain hoses that are on the starboard side of the engine, for draining the coolant / sea water. These are flexible hoses. I did find 1, quite rigid hose stuck up between the air filter housing and the exhaust manifold.... it had the same brass plug as you'd find on the 2 drain hoses, but no hose clip, hence no pressure on it..... I suspect a bit of tom-foolery here and will need to be investigated, but thought i'd throw it out there anyway!

Appreciate any assistance you can offer for my friend.

Great pics, thank you!

Yes, that's exactly what I expected to see, but there was no crankcase breather filter, or a housing for it to attach to, as you can see from my OP pics.

On my 41 that spiggot you circled in red has a hose going to the airfilter housing downstream of the filter element so crankcase fumes get burnt and exit with the exhaust. On earlier 41s there was a crankcase breather filter canister as shown in your first picture.Did the 32s evolve in the same way?

There is no doubt the engine has seen some cosmetic paintwork . The metal tube from the supercharger had been painted black. Clearly the crankcase breather assembly had been removed which doesn't sound like a good plan. The coolant reservoir is badly stained which may suggest lack of attention to coolant changes. .Some crud in the reservoir isn't unusual but the reservoir has to be removed to thoroughly clean it. It sounds like the coolant and raw water drain hoses have been modified or removed.

The AD31 (basically the same engine but without the supercharger) didn’t have a crankcase breather. Are they definitely KAD32s? Could they be AD31s that have been converted? Another possibility is that maybe the very early KAD32 didn’t have them.

That's the million dollar question!! I can't see any serial numbers... not sure if the AD31 could be 'converted'.

I spotted all of the above you mentioned and it's on his list.... problem is finding the coolant drain hose... it (and the sea water) hose seem to have disappeared... either that or hidden away very well!!

That's what i'm wondering.... did early 32's not have a crankcase breathe filter? All of mine did!

The pipework and cam covers and expansion tank suggest KAD32.
But where did the breather go?
I think even the early ones were meant to have one.

My KAD32 does not have a crankcase breather either. Just bought a 1996 231pro-line that was retrofitted with a KAD32 by/for the Volvo penta manufacturer in my area. They used to take employees out fishing. So I would think they wouldn’t remove something that vital…I hope

As mentioned in an earlier post, the assumption is that the 32s did away with the crankcase breather just as the 41s did during their evolution.

The best thing about the early engines with only the crankcase filter.
After a few thousand hours and the inevitable lack of filter change,it did ensure a nice film of oil over everything in the engine compartment greatly slowing down corrosion on engine parts.
