Hi Guys ........ it would appear that TM has a leak from somewhere from behind the two pulleys dead centre on the front of the engine ..... so have been sniffing around here, http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7738870-26-3042.aspx ,... and have come to the right/wrong conclusion the water pump is leaking !!!!... "CRISIS"!!!!!!!........ so here come the questions, 1, is it a new for old,..... 2, overhaul bearing + seal only,.... 3, doable afloat (don't really want to tow home having just paid for two months mooring at mercury)...... 4, self doable by an "old git" (yours truly),..... 5, any special tools required,..... 6, anything excuse to tell swmbo why boat needs money spent (under the disguise of enjoying a day out)..... etc etc etc ......... ALL ADVICE / CRITISIZUMS URGENTLY REQUIRED ....THANK YOU GUYS .......regards steve..

Hi Steve. First off unless its kinda pouring out you may be ok for many more hours, if you need to change my advice is to get a new pump which would be fine replacing with the boat still in the water and with your skills it should also be ok getting done on your own. Its not that difficult but there are a lot of bolts that needs to come off and then on. The pump can be repaired but there are some sensitive stuff that you need special tools for and even if you got them its easy to break. I left mine to a pro (car) mechanic who after 3 tries gave up.
The pump has a double bearing design, with one bearing away from the water so it will keep pumping cooling water almost no matter what.

It could be the water pump shaft seal or it could be the rubber ring between the top of the puup and the bottom of the thermostat housing. Its all do-able afloat, if its the ring its very tricky to replace without taking the water pump off as the stat housing has be fitted at an angle to engage with the heat exchanger and its hard to get the new ring into the seating grooves, whereas the pump just fits straight up from underneath.

THANK YOU ONE AND ALL FOR YOUR RESPONSES.......I have had some PM,s on the subject, (thanks you guys you know who you are), and reading through them, this is a job that I cant do !!!!!....as of now the bearings are smooth, quiet, free.. YES I KNOW this wont last, but at least with regular topups and a close eye at the moment the boat can be moved... the main prob in my case is access and only having limited time to fight the prob...at home all the stuff needed is there, and there is nothing I loath more than doing a rush time limit job because in my case, rush= bu*ger it up n do it twice..... so here I sit in the cabin covered in oil n muck instead of going for another night ride on a fab evening!! GGGRRRRR GNASH etc etc etc ........ just a thought what is the consensus of a temp go at K seal just as a stop gap?..... THANKS GUYS..

If I were away from home berth and didn't have to run too far to get there, then yes try a temporary fix, but with only one engine going to sea with a fault that could easily worsen and will if this happens at best means the engine is unusable, and therefore the boat will require assistance, and worse an overheat occurs and you wreck the engine into the bargain.

I know its extremely frustrating, but my view is fixing properly it is mandatory, Do you really want to take her out thinking the whole time that this fault could turn from a dribble to a pour ?

Hi Steve. Sorry to hear of your troubles, I've replaced these on cars before but obviously not this engine. I can't see any reason why you can't do this afloat as the fresh water system is sealed from the sea water system. Happy to lend some muscle and tools if required.

I have no idea what the consensus would be, but my vote would be for "no no no no no no".
I looked into changing mine myself, but rapidly chickened out and asked VolvoPaul to do it instead.

Had these pumps fail twice of my old boat with AD31s. To add to your woes, the pump is quite pricey... best part of £400+ if memory serves....
As said, can be done afloat, and no I wouldn't use seak and seal type cure. What if it failed and all your coolant was dumped whist you were out.

Full retail price on a freshwater pump 3809412 is £272.40
Keypart have them for £245.16

If water is leaking..probably from a tell tale hole in the bottom of the water pump casing designed for the purpose, then the inner seal has gone which will lead to the inner bearing failing sooner or later.
Easy enough to remove and replace the pump, subject to access, (in my case the engine was out of the boat so I could sit on a stool in front of it).
Dismantling the pump easy enough also.
But a waste of time reassembling the new bearing and seal yourself unless you have the right tool and knowledge, some of the parts are very fragile. Tried and failed the first time so took it to my Volvo mech who reassembled it in a few minutes. (Note you might not know you have failed until you have reassembled and started to refill system with coolant)

Sorry to use your thread. Is your water leak solved? I have similar issue, but I'm sure that leak isn't coming from fresh water pump. It's coming somewhere below the heat exchanger. What are possible failures to cause this. i would be really happy from a help.

Did you get this leak issue sorted. Ihave similar issue, but I'm sure that problem is not in the fresh water pump. Water is leaking somewhere below the heat exchanger. Do you have any idea what could cause this problem.

Sorry to "steal" your thread. I have similar problem and didn't want start a new thread. I think leakage, that I have isn't coming from water pump or from thermostatic housing. I have located it below the heat exchanger. Cuold please help me what could cause the problem. I would be very grateful from any help.
