** FOR ANYONE ELSE WHO WANTS TO REPLACE THEIR KAD 60A (12V) ALTERNATOR WITH OE VALEO ALTERNATOR **

It's a Valeo A13N24

I e-mailed 'Engine Room Marine Parts' on a Saturday morning. Had a response within a half hour and had the Invoice paid within an hour.... all via e-mail. Excellent customer service so.... let's hope it arrives in good time!

Volvo Penta 12V/60A Alternator OEM VALEO A13N234 is the link to the KAD alternator (If you're after 60A).

I have had serious negative experiences in the past with cheaper alternators, so in this instance I was sticking with OE equipment, but didn't want to pay the Volvo premium.

ORIGINAL POST

Having had my alternator repaired twice, it has gone on me again. I had the regulator replaced less than 20 (running) hours ago and earlier the voltage started spiking again (erratic from 13.5 - 15) - Alternator removed immediately! It was also very hot when I removed it.

It's time to replace.

From what I can gather, it's a Valeo 60A. The cheapest place I found was here: 12411N – WPS, Alternator – Valeo IR/EF 60 Amp/12 Volt, CW

It cross references to the Volvo Part no.

At this stage i'm not concerned on price, however I don't feel like splashing out $$$ for a Genuine 'Volvo' alternator.

1) Can anyone confirm this is indeed the correct alternator?
2) Can anyone recommend a reliable UK supplier (I'm in Ireland)

Thanks folks.

PS. COVID is obviously affecting KAD engines with all the posts here lately!

Found a cheaper link here, but not sure if it's genuine Valeo: CA1192 Valeo-CN

Infact, not sure if the link I posted in the OP is genuine Valeo.

My main concern is finding a genuine Valeo! I bought cheap alternators from a UK store and they were Chinese carp! Had to return them.

Turns out both of the above are not genuine Valeo... the hunt continues!

Whats the fixation on Valeo? Both Lucas and Bosch do this alternator and it's common to many engines. You can pick them up for about 140 quid

Sometimes the wire studs at the back are in different places .In theory you can stretch across ....but Sod’s law and boats are inseparable.
Then there’s the bracket / attachment bolts .....a few mm misalignment and the dam thing won’t fit .Or if it does the pulley won’t line up properly. You find out about the pulley about 1hr later 25 miles off shore in a chop :) , when the alternator light comes on and the ER is full of black dust as the belt shredded itself.

Your spare does the same? The mental torture is will it last .....rtn to port etc ?

Lucas: LRA01246 is what you want

Thanks for that. Funny its LRA01656 that came up as cross reference when I was googling??

They appear to be the same but the model you quote is 50A. Always thought I had 60A?

Yes the original Volvo 873770 is 60 amp. I was looking at the mountings. Can your battery bank accept 60 Amps or are you running anything else that requires that amount?

I have 3 x 130ah so the 2 x 60A alternators I want to stick with.

At this stage I'm just going to email Prior Diesel and price genuine

Yup after an evening of searching I just want to call someone, give them my card details and be done with it.

Tha ks all for your help. If someone does find a source for the Valeo please do let me know, wont be ordering until monday

Thanks Pete. Not sire if that's a Valeo, when keyboard say REPLACEMENT they mean non genuine.

I've found Prior Diesel very competitive for genuine parts.

Ill call keypart tomorrow and ask what the manufacturer is

Thanks Bruce. I'll he calling around tomorrow. Given marinepartseurope price I suspect Prior may be able to beat or match that ebay price and their customer service is excellent

I'd just get two of these, for less than half the price of an OEM one, and take a punt. If the first fails you have a second to get you out of a hole. It's only a 5 min job to change.

I cant see that you will notice the difference between a 50 and 60A alternator, unless you do lots of very short hops with heavy electrical drain in between.

I am sceptical about aftermarket alternators. I purchased 2 from a UK supplier a while back and instantly the voltage was hopping all over the place, as if the regulator wasn't working.

To be fair, the supplier took them back no questions asked.

This is why i'm sticking with Valeo (OE).

I think I have found a UK supplier! Once they confirm, i'll happily share the details.
