Hi all,
Replacing the alternator (with another OE Valeo) this weekend. They don't come with pullies so i'll be taking the pulley off my old one. - It's only intermittent not charging and probably cheap to repair, but at 20 years old, i'm not going to whinge at replacing it. Will repair it (most likely only a diode) as a spare.

I know i'll see when I take off my old alternator, but is there a washer/spacer between the fan and pulley, or does the pulley go straight on (ie. pulley / fan touching each other) - I just ask as there's a spacer / washer (including several other small spacers / washers) on the new one.

Just thought i'd ask here in the off-chance people know.

Many thanks.

Just check the new one lines up with the crank pulley with a straight edge. I have had non Volvo marine ones that required a spacer and some that didnt. All fitted and worked.

Fair point - will try to remember to bring a straight edge with me!

Hopefully your top bolt will come out with ease - salt water from the top of the impeller housing (cant remember that name at present) always goes directly below onto the alternator top bolt and seizes up

Had it off before. I'm on fresh water (boat only ever spent 1 year in salt water) and a DeWalt impact gun = light work!

A huge design flaw from Volvo... surprised no one made up a plate / cover to protect the alternator.
definitely - when I first got my boat - it wasn't a job I envisaged at the time so with limited tools and space I had to use a hacksaw blade (with gloves) and chop the bolt just to get the alternator off - then I took it home and had to drill out the remaining stud in the hole - sourced a new bolt and refitted with the vaseline on. - Had I know about it at the time something I would have used would have been a small air saw to make life easier
