KAD300 question

Looking at a used boat with twin KAD300's. 2005 boat with estimated 750 hours, apparantly the LCD's in the gauges have gone/are U/S.
Is this a common fault and is there anything in the ECU that records hours that could be read with diagnostics?

Also on its post lockdown run prior to sale it was down on power, investigated and turbo's were not functioning properly due to lack of use during lockdown, corrosion or similar in turbos's? Both turbos's have been replaced as a result. Not questioning the work or anything just seems drastic on a 750 hours engine. Any thoughts?

Cheers,

TC

Faulty hour meters in the Volvo Penta tachometers are so common as to be absolutely normal. Not sure the same is true of edc displays ..
I doubt a few months of lockdown caused a turbo issue but long term lack of use may have.

Turbos on KAD series are best considered consumable parts .

The LCD displays always fail and can be replaced (Volvo Penta Tachometer LCD Replacement Screen for VP 873992, 873688, 87399). It's a bit of a fiddly job but there are tutorials on Youtube. Once replaced, the original hours will be displayed. The ECU also records the number of hour run but you'll need a Vodia diagnostic tool to access them (your VP dealer can do this).

Turbos on these engines last between 15 and 20 years before the exhaust housing corrodes away. The turbos can be reconditioned for around £600 or replaced for around £800.

If you plug a VODIA diagnostic box in you can read the engine hours so they can be verified.
the LCD displays on all volvo engine rev counters go iffy (VDO)
yes the turbos are made of cheese - I have two myself, however they are relatively cheap, subject to access easy to change.
On the plus side the KADs are easy and relatively cheap to service. No anodes to worry about and simple parts.

great, thanks team. If I go ahead on this one i'll get an engine check done and get the hours confirmed from the ECU, then fit new dials (y)

Good to know replacing turbos is "normal":D

cheers,
