KAD300 / DP-G - Emergency Steering

I probably should have stated this in the OP... The reason I mentioned "No RNLI etc..." was because the question came up when my boat was being surveyed the other day.

The surveyor asked "What is your Emergency Steering" - I responded with a blank face and couldn't answer. It got me genuinely thinking, hence why i'm looking for practical answers rather than the RNLI / Call a friend scenario above.

Interesting. I had this in the past (no autopilot) and was able to steer the boat with the wheel turning very heavy. I do grease the grease pins inside the boat on the belhousing every year. Looks like I had a lucky escape.

If the power steering pump fails, your emergency steering is to manually use the cable system with extra effort. If the system is properly lubricated, and the cables are in good condition, this is your answer.

If the cable fails, set the drives ahead, maybe use something to lock the steering tie bar or arms if possible, then use engine thrust to steer.

If that fails, it's game over.
