Hey there, I'm having an issue with my 44 where the starter bendix jumps back and forth and does not stay engaged with the flywheel. I have the motor currently out of the boat in my garage as I am currently going through it after I got a killer deal on it from a running takeout. I'm not sure if I'm missing something in my testing. I have it mocked up like it would be in the boat and just trying to figure all the little things out before installing. It does turn over by hand and has about 1500 hrs. wiring all looks clean and I have checked connections and bench tested the starter to rule out any issues there.
It is throwing a code for 5.4 and 5.5 which I assume is because its not hooked up completely. seems as though I might have a ground issue or something that im not seeing that is not keeping it engaged.

Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated. Im sure I am missing something. Been scouring the internet and not finding my specific problem anywhere.

Starter Motor not producing enough torques?
Weak battery / poor connection or ground somewhere?

Edit: looks to be an overrunning clutch type?

I’m assuming you have a pre-engage starter, Bendix is a term from 40 plus years ago which you won’t have.
Your solenoid is “piggy-backed” on the starter and current does not go fully to the starter until pinion engagement is fully made. My guess is you have a faulty internal contact within the solenoid.
My advice is to take the motor to a (back street) starter repair shop

ps what does “ I got a killer deal on it from a running takeout” mean?
If it means you already have a replacement starter motor ignore the above.

Thanks, I guess not the bendix but the gear that engages the flywheel will jump back and forth without spinning the starter. I have like 4 starters that I am trying to put together to see which works and I did buy a new solenoid for one. Engine was running from a guy that switched to outboards from a similar boat. I had a very high hour kad 42 that had overheated pretty badly and for the price it was hard to say no since the rebuild on the 42 was much more expensive. I also got a parts motor in the deal and some other parts he had leftover.

I will give another starter a try this morning.

Brand new battery and when bench testing the starter it seemed to have plenty of power. Yes, the overrunning clutch type I was mistaken with the bendix.

I’ve just looked up your full codes which relate to the shift actuator , as you are working in that area check the power supply to the shift actuator which is from the starter motor pos and neg , plus the inline spade fuse , as it’s possible you don’t have those connected the ECU can see the shift actuator has no power supply hence you wont have a neutral light , therefore it wont send a start signal from the main relay or the ground relay to the start relay , you need to wire up the whole loom to test the start circuit .
The reason behind this is so you cannot start it in gear .
Also I’d do a lever calibration .

I was able to connect everything and clear the faults. I am able to simulate a shift with the controls and everything. I tested for voltage drop and i am fairly certain that the jumper cables i was using to test are the issue. Pending pulling out the proper battery cables from the boat ill test to see if thats been my issue the whole time. Ill make another post if resolved.

thanks everyone
