I have a Cranchi Zaffiro 34 with twin KAD 43 diesels. The rev counter on the port engine has an intermittent fault whereby it will occasionally flick up and down for a few seconds although the engine is revving around 3000rpm. It seems to be getting worse - any ideas much appreciated. tsmat

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I had just the same on my mercruiser rev counter. It started to flicker now and then. I cleaned up all the rear contacts and it worked again for a while. Then it completley packed up.......so then a couple of thumps later and we'd be back in business!!! This carried on for a couple of months, so I was ready to buy a new one..........and then suddenly it's worked fine for the rest of the season!!!!!!!!

regards Paul.

Had a similar experience last week with one of my KAD43's except it was at 1600RPM. For me it was accompanied by a supercharger belt squeel which led me to tighten the belt idler (30ft.lbs torque) both squeel and flicker went away. 1600RPM is when the supercharger kicks in and I think kick out is 2200RPM

Unable to locate a wiring diagram on line but as far as I can discover the rev-counter on this engine does not take its signal from a W terminal on the alternator but from a separate sensor mounted on the engine.

However check the power supply to the instrument. If it follows Volvo's normal color code the positive supply is a blue/red wire and the negative is a black wire.

The sensor is located on the timing gear casing and should be fairly obvious.
Check the connections to it. Very probably grey wires.(should be the same clour as the connections on the instrument!)

Check any connections on those wires you can find and check the multipin connectors on the wiring harness between engine and instrument panel.

You dont want to pay Volvo's price for a new tacho if the trouble is a bad connection on the wiring!

Many thanks for your suggestions, I will check them out next week when I am back on board

Cheers
