Hi,
My friend just took over a used fairline with twin kad42 850 hours of use. Did well for about 2 hours of cruising. Then we arrived back home and during mooring problem started. In neutral he can rev the starboard engine but when engaging gear he will be able to push it only to 800 rpms at max...hardly taking any revs. We have tried to turn the propeller by hand and it spin smoothly.... so do not expect issues with the z-drive. Any ideas guys ?

If it will rev freely in neutral but not in gear I would check the filters first and if they are ok or replaced then the fuel pipes all the way to the tank. Also th fuel lift pump, engines require very little fuel to rev without load, but under load they need a lot more so it could be a fuel supply problem, I have seen these symptons before and it was either restricted fuel flow or the lift pump.
