I need to do the shaft seals on my Kad 32 water pump due to water leaking from behind the impellor.
It seems straight forward, just wondering is there any issue with removing the pump while the boat is still in the water?

You might find that the impeller is below the waterline or close to it so when you remove the raw water inlet hose it might be worth using a wooden bung and jubilee clip to block it and tie it up so it remains above the waterline for good measure.

Can’t you close the sea cock?

Or either way shouldn’t the strainer (if not the engine/impeller) be installed above the static waterline?

Otherwise the seals are easy, just need to improvise if you don’t have a press (vice and/or big sockets are useful) so you don’t damage the pump shaft when separating the bits.

There isn’t a seacock on the KAD32 and whilst the top of the strainer is just above the waterline (or was in our S34) the pump is below the strainer. I guess in theory it shouldn’t leak as the inlet goes into the strainer but we had a bit sloshing out when changing an impeller. I am thinking that if the pump is removed and taken away for re-furb then I wouldn’t want the system open as movement of the boat may cause siphoning. I have experience of that with a fuel pipe and it took a lot of cleaning up!
