Hi - after having some issues with my kad300 mainly being the turbo not kicking in the first thing I found was a air leek near the air filter housing and the one valve housing now fixed.
then after reading the thread here Change of exhaust elbow on KAD 300
and not wanting to hijack About Time's thread I have started this one up.
So I removed the Elbow with the intention of doing the Exhaust riser repair and found that the top of riser was at water line level - so that has been put on hold till the boat is lifted out for winter maintenance however it would appear to be in good condition probably because the top of the riser is mainly submerged and very little air to get at the cast steel fingers crossed.
So onto the elbow and having it soaked in a bucket of brick acid for 18 1/2 hrs ( i did want 24hrs but time was against me) I thoroughly rinsed it with fresh water getting the loose corroded material out - I then set about with a pencil grinder to remove the more stubborn rust and a wire wheel in a battery drill.
With the wire wheel I removed some surface rust and found this.
And This
At this point I stopped work and contacted VolvoPaul for his opinion which in that it needed replacing as you can see the cracks are quite visible.
Paul got straight back to me and confirmed that it definitely needed replacement.
The turbo is going to be reconditioned probably in a months time due to work commitments.
but for now my options are for getting a new elbow - Keyparts list one but I will need to ask if it is painted as their website shows an un painted one - contact a volvo dealer for a price and again if its coated.
I would like to go the stainless route and what is irritating is before moving house I was starting to fabricate one but I have no access at the moment to carry this on.
That all said for the Keyparts one at £260 + delivery and the original elbow being on for 15 years is it really much of a heartache to just put a cast iron one back on ?
I am keen to try and get one this week if possible
as a side note does anyone have a part number for the small ring seal that goes on the side pipe that bolts to the elbow?
any opinions are most welcome.
