Hi - after having some issues with my kad300 mainly being the turbo not kicking in the first thing I found was a air leek near the air filter housing and the one valve housing now fixed.
then after reading the thread here Change of exhaust elbow on KAD 300
and not wanting to hijack About Time's thread I have started this one up.

So I removed the Elbow with the intention of doing the Exhaust riser repair and found that the top of riser was at water line level - so that has been put on hold till the boat is lifted out for winter maintenance however it would appear to be in good condition probably because the top of the riser is mainly submerged and very little air to get at the cast steel fingers crossed.

So onto the elbow and having it soaked in a bucket of brick acid for 18 1/2 hrs ( i did want 24hrs but time was against me) I thoroughly rinsed it with fresh water getting the loose corroded material out - I then set about with a pencil grinder to remove the more stubborn rust and a wire wheel in a battery drill.
With the wire wheel I removed some surface rust and found this.

At this point I stopped work and contacted VolvoPaul for his opinion which in that it needed replacing as you can see the cracks are quite visible.
Paul got straight back to me and confirmed that it definitely needed replacement.
The turbo is going to be reconditioned probably in a months time due to work commitments.
but for now my options are for getting a new elbow - Keyparts list one but I will need to ask if it is painted as their website shows an un painted one - contact a volvo dealer for a price and again if its coated.
I would like to go the stainless route and what is irritating is before moving house I was starting to fabricate one but I have no access at the moment to carry this on.
That all said for the Keyparts one at £260 + delivery and the original elbow being on for 15 years is it really much of a heartache to just put a cast iron one back on ?
I am keen to try and get one this week if possible
as a side note does anyone have a part number for the small ring seal that goes on the side pipe that bolts to the elbow?

any opinions are most welcome.

Jon

Thanks Farsco - unfortunately that elbow is in Canada and looking to get one this week.

I have found repower marine do an elbow for £192 +£7 next day and also the seal I am looking for.

Thanks Bruce - Unfortunately I had already ordered one from repower marine.
I have decided to go the cast route this time if it last a few years then its only a few £ per month

So a question regarding the cast elbow.
Could anything be done to the insides coating wise to slow down the corrosion
ie spraying wax oil?

I have had water ingress in my engine bay for 18 months on my Targa34 and it is causing havoc. I only found where it came from on my last trip when I was doing some work down there in torrential rain!!! The damp in winter causes a lot of damage. my turbo housing is looking rusted and we are guessing that the cooling elbow is blocked as I am getting very slight overheating problems when gunning the boat for about 25 minutes full throttle.
Any comments or opinions on these pics?
PS. I will seal the arse out of the gap I found next time that between the hull and top section right in the back corner. Built like a British Leyland Fairline :(

I replaced my elbows on my KAD43 last year and used Keypart. Yes mind came painted and with very easily detachable “Made in China” stickers so don’t think that because it’s Keypart that it’s some VP European supplier. My last ones lasted 20 years so no debate for me to stay with cast iron.
They fitted and work OK

RE the gap between hull and deck rear corner. Check the opposite corner as well . These gaps may well be purposely left by Fairline to let any water trapped between the mouldings/rubbing strake to escape.

Hi Ged,. Probably not a great idea to run the boat at full throttle for more than a few minutes.
