Hi - I am in the middle of gathering up filter and oil information ready for a full engine service.
I have gone on keyparts website and found that there is listed 2 filters under the reverse gear section one is under HS1 and the next one is under HS63.

Here is the link https://www.keypart.com/volvo-penta/diesel-engine/kad300a/20012005

Am I right in thinking that there is 2 filters servicing the reverse gear or is it one or the other and I need to find out which one I need ???

Many thanks for any opinions

Jon

You don't need any filter for DP-G those are both inboard gearbox filters

Thank you for your reply Boat2016 - I wonder if keyparts website has an error.

So the only filters I need are the 2 fuel filters - 1 oil Filter and the oil needed is 11 litres of 15w40 vds 2 for the engine - supercharger oil - and dexron 2 for the power trim and steering and the air filter.

I find Keypart website a bit confusing and use one of the VP web shops as you put in your engine number for parts specific to your engine, most will offer a discount and have often found to be better priced than Keypart

Thank you for your advice much appreciated - I am currently looking on flee bay and the racor primary fuel filters are much cheaper than key parts

If you can find a volvo truck dealer..there is one off m271if you are Southampton area ..then the now current vds 3 might be cheaper through them..they can usually source the filters but you might need to ask them to get them in....there are also non volvo oil specialists who do non volvo but vds approved...I normally get 20 litre drum and a 5 litre can for 2 x kad 300

Thank you gjgm - Although I am not in Southampton area - I do have a Volvo truck dealer/garage about 4 miles from me - is the vds 3 compatible ? over vds 2 ??

Inline filters is a good source of alternative filters . The Baldwin oil and fuel filters for my kad32 were half the price of genuine VP items.
https://www.inlinefilters.co.uk/

However I only use genuine VP belts as I have found them to be long lived and trouble free. I also heard of a Gates belt failure .

I do remember reading on here a while back about non genuine fuel filters failing, I would be very careful with what's used, the saving is not always worth the hassle caused when it goes wrong!

I use Mahle filters - they're used in their hundreds of thousands (if not millions) at any time.... never let me down! Mahle are a well respected filter brand.

Thank you for the heads up /warning and will be aware of buying too cheap a part
I agree with alt that Mahle filters are good and have seen the recor primary filters half the price of keyparts.
Many thanks for the replies

I think it is just the next development of the oil, so, yes. I didn't know Volvo even still made 2.

Even if the Volvo genuine parts are slightly more expensive you know they are going to be the right parts and offer the amount of filtering. Even if the filter screws on ok how do you really know if it is providing the correct amount of filtration? By making small saving once a year you could line your self up for a big bill later. You could also have a nice relaxing evening out on the boat rather than spending your time cross referencing and collecting them from different suppliers.

I've been using Mahle filters (and Gates belts) for about 18 years now (christ, i'm feeling old) and i've never had a bother (and I know plenty of my ex-boats are still going strong).

I get all my standard service items from local auto factors, so quite contradictory to your statement regarding time cross-referencing ie. I drive 1 mile to my auto factors and have all the parts I need as opposed to ordering bits from a UK firm online and waiting 2-3 days for delivery (I'm in West Ireland).

That said, where necessary, I of course order Volvo. An example being compressor oil... I prefer to just have the 'right stuff' there (although I know of others using same grade stuff for many years without issue)

Who actually makes Volvo filters, out of curiosity?

I'm with you on that one, I once had a broker say to me that a lot of buyers are not impressed when they see a mix of non genuine parts on an engine, they then tend to look closer at everything else to see where else they cut corners.
I know it's up to the individual but personally I would expect to see genuine parts used, I know VP don't make their own filters but are made for them to a spec

When I sold my kad 300 DPG ,boat a thick history file with genuine parts and the other side not mentioned here ,proper service guys , ( not discreding the DIY ers ) ,but stuff like bellows ,etc with outdrives --look better to the "punter " if they perceive it been done by the book , by Vp agents etc

It's all about perception at resale times- sure ,but any seemingly pennies saves now may frustrate a sale later worthy 1000,s in terms of price achieved - as said put a buyer off .
More so in a flooded market , popular boat ,
Mine sold in 3 weeks -- or course many other factors -- but agree I don,t like to see none VP parts on ageing outdrive set ups .
Just one more thing Merc a few years ago were doing a big thing about knock off parts .
When you walked into the dealer show room they had a board with starter motors , filters all sectioned in 1/2 so you see inside .
From the out side --same except maybe different colour --- inside far inferior , eg -- less paper fins in the filters ,smaller poxy copper winding in the starter motor .
Just saying ------ real eye opener -cosmetically you can't tell --see inside a filter .
