Just wondering about chart plotters

Has anyone ever produced an electronic chart of the non-tidal Thames? Not that I need one but it might be fun to own one.

My C-Map chart for the east coast and round to Poole covers the Thames all the way up to Sandford, doesn't show depths but lots of local stuff. I always have it on just for fun, nice to see yourself chugging along the river on a screen, shows Ashmount as a boggy area I think.

If it existed would need to be on a large scale in order to show the "central third" of the river fairway only and presumable there would be quite a lot of "Green" bits.

You line em up Byron, and I'll knock em in!!

The C Map local chart I have for my CP180 covers all of the thames up to Inglesham and beyond. There are no depths on the non tidal part but it does show all the locks, lock cuts and weirs etc

Don't know about the Thames, but my Garmin G2 vision is very helpful on the R Severn, showing moorings, marina's, services etc, and brings the map to life so I can pinpoint location. Assume the same on other rivers.

I fitted a Garmin Nuvi 5000, you can obtain a third-party mounting plate to fit it on an instrument console. Read about it on https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=11547

I use the Garmin Mapsource Topo Great Britain map downloaded to it, this is basically a scan of the OS map so it shows all details, islands, small streams, footpaths, roads etc.

It's very good and clear, with a 5.2 inch display.

eureauweb

Hi Byron,
We have a PC plotter chart for the Thames on CD called Water-Way from eureauweb. Information is taken from the Nicholson publishers. With your laptop you connect a GPS devise to it and it will show your position. Can also use with a PDA and update information from their website. Gives you information like pubs, restaurants, shops, facilities etc along the Thames. A nice product if you have your laptop on board.

Suzanne. . . It ain't worth me buying a laptop or an expensive plotter as my sea-going days are over. I doubt if I could even get insurance now, as you know I was always single handed even on my hundreds of continental trips. They had already restricted me to being no longer than 15 hours between ports.

Having said all that and looked at the map. I must say it is very effective if somewhat pricey at £130 or so. I guess I could get a pirate copy easy enough if I was that sort of person ;)
