I wonder how many boats carry a real 'heaving line' ?

This is a light rope capable of being easily thrown and usually having a 'monkeys fist' worked into the thrown end to add a little weight without endangering the 'catcher'.
Once the end of the heaving line is received aboard the other vessel a heavier line can be attached and pulled across.

Dunno what a 'monkeys fist' is ?..........shame on you.......see <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.boatsontheweb.com/> Website, Photo Gallery, Chat Room, Burgees

Re: monkey fist

well, ahem, i do axshully have a heaving line, and it's purple, to match the er saloon sofa. Burgundyben made a monkey fist in the end of it whilst he was in the middle of biscay, so i am keeping as a memento of the trip! Ok, I am actually keeping it cos not sure how to do one myself...

Still don't reckon i could accurately chuck a monkey fist into the cockpit of a small boat from another smallish boat, in difficult sea. Spose from the deck of a big ship to the shore is a lot more easy, innit?

I do, complete with "Monkeys Paw" - same as the fist but with 4 loops. Wound round a cube of lignum vitae with the edges well rounded, then repeatedly dipped in red lead paint - just the right weight and balance.

On the sublect of towing or being towed - small point to consider is whos warp do you use? the rescue boat or the towed boat?

Me, I'd prepare my own warp and bridle ready to pass to the rescue or towing boat as they passed rather than faff about trying to rig the bridle and balance the tails.

Also, I beleive if you accept another boat's warp for towing / recovery of your own boat you are defacto accepting the other vessels right to salvage but not if the warp is yours and they accept your warp for the tow.

Not that I think any kind hearted person here would dream of salvage rights - or would they - or perhaps we should ask "are there any kind hearted boat owners out there?" /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Is that the one you tie round your waist to stop you falling in while puking (AKA heaving) over the side?/forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Re: salvage

oh, here we go.

Yep, best give a tower yerown lines, or, as you take their lines you could say "do you relinquish your salvage rights?" and they wd normally confirm yes.

A salvage claim would need there to be a significant risk to the salvors life for it to be valid, i understand. So towing someone into a marina with own lines does not mean it's worth several grand to the tower. Note also that salvage claims are only a proportion of the boat value, belive maximum 1/4 in the extreme of it being quite busted on the ooer argh rocks. Not the whole boat.

Re: salvage

Wadda ye mean "here we go"? thought it a interesting point. BTW I believe salvage is usually 10% not 25% - mind you I have been known to be talked into a bottle or two of the "Good Stuff" instead (as a little "thank you")

Re: salvage

sorry, it is an interesting point - there was a long thread about salvage a while ago, it wasn't a dig at you :)

You are probably correct about the 10%, and of course the going rate in terms of thankyous for a tow.
