...I motored round to Pwllheli this morning, having got up at 5 to drive to Porthmadog in the first place. Got my boat into the basin and craned out for prop replacement.

There were barnacles everywhere!! Dammit - I put two coats of Trilux on the thing at the start of the season!! Does anyone know an anti-foul that actually works??.

And another thing!! Where have my nice new anodes gone???? Looking like paper lace they were!! - and I wondered why my boat was only doing 20kts at 3000rpm - the little paddle wheel thingy was stuffed up with barnacles. At least I found out why my stbd oil pressure guage wasn't working - knackered sensor.

On a more serious note - and the reason for the title, the engineer phoned me to let me know that my water pumps on both motors were close to failure. Eeek!!

Should all be OK by Wed / Thu though. No wonder I'm feeling poor as a church mouse.

...and finally - it hammered down with rain for the 12nm trip and my new canopy didn't leak a drop - brilliant!

I just commissioned a boat that is going to join you in Pwllheli very soon, its just stopped off for an LPG conversion en route. I know we have a major problem with anodes here in Southampton (Hamble) and on handover I suggested they let us know what the anode situation is like your neck of the woods, well thanks you answered my thoughts, obviously not much better!!

The anodes would not have made the end of the season. Weed & barnacle growth is also bad this year, however waterskiers should do OK as the water is quite warm -maybe there's a link in there somewhere??

Pwllheli has a good refuelling berth - just tell them to leave some LPG for me! Maybe we'll see the resurgance of LPG if red diesel gets canned - who knows?

Oh i am sure they will do there best to extinguish all supplies as they have a 500 litre diesel tank and a 500 litre LPG tank, combined with twin 8.1 GXis Volvo that when we PDi`d the volvo computer recorded 140 lph per engine!!! Me thinks your marina needs bigger tanks!!

Think it might be the location not the auntie fowl

I had a couple of years in Conwy and had to fight the little ******s off with a stick.

Here on east coast no problem

Maybe Welsh barnacles are special breed

You seem to be having a lot of problems this year - been albatross shooting or something?

Yes indeed - I must have run over an albatross whilst cruising along one day. Not all problems are of the boat's own making though; this time around it's an insurance claim as a result of me pulling some hapless boaters off rocks and dinking two of my props. OK - the water pumps are a bit of a bugger :(

That said, I use my boat very frequently and it didn't even winter out this year, I was using it with an inch of ice on the foredeck in January! So there must be some correlation between use and wear & tear (I think!!).

Dave re your barnacle growth etc, do you happen to know what the sea temperature is in your locality. Maybe it is warmer than the East coast contributor. It is around 16C on south coast at present according to www.chimet.co.uk an the weeds are growing just fine!

We are on an estuary and it changes daily - but it is around 17C at the moment and it has some way to go to warm up. Dont forget, we get the gulf stream here, which they don't on the east coast.

Pwllheli is alive at the moment, there are dangerously large clumps of weed floating in the harbour. Enough to stop one guy rowing as he could not get his oars back out of the water. He just stared perplexed.

Enough to stall an outboard if you drive through it and enough to make my mooring lines surprisingly heavy.

Did you ever find the boats name Dave. Congrats on the cover, I found a stunning leak appear through the heads window, during that rain water was running in a constant stream, glad I was being a wimp and sitting on the mooring!
