It seems that the latest craze with Jet Skis is to ride the wake of Motor Boats at some jaunty angle approx 4-5 feet behind and of course well toward the middle of ones boat, thus them not being able to see exactly what is going on in front of one.
Now just imagine that you are entering the Solent, past Hurst Point, with all the melee of vessels that normally ensues there, one of these Jet Skis, "Cops a Lift", (I am told this is what it is called) and then you have, for whatever reason, to take evasive action to comply with "The Rules of the Road", perhaps a Yottie deciding to tack, for no apparent good reason but nonetheless it is your responsibility to evade, Lobster Pot with attendant hanging ropes perhaps, A Railway Sleeper, whatever. Thus one swerves, throttles back whatever and the pursuing Jet Skier ends up on your Swim Platform!
They sustain back injuries which leave them badly disabled. Now in this completely screwed up world, (circa the recent discussions re Tony Martin) their lawyer decides to sue the Motor Boater as they did not take evasive action, i.e gently slowing, holding up a placard telling them to p##s off, etc. to stop the Jet Skier, prior to them sustaining their injuries. Their argument: The Motor Boater as a reasonable and sensible person could and should have recognised the danger the Jet Skier was putting themselves in.
What do you all think would be the outcome of the case, what would you do or have you done when these people jump onto your wake etc. etc?? Is there any one that can communicate globally with these people our concerns perhaps?

Don't you think jet skis have been done to death just recently?

How about trying a different subject / soapbox?

You don't mention in your profile how long you've been enjoying our sport so based on the question I'll assume that you're a new boy and yet to attend your first day skipper lesson.

Collision Regs (can't remember the numbers)

Any vessel aproaching abaft the beam shall be deamed the overtaking vessel and shall be obliged to keep a safe distance fron the vessel being overtaken. To have hit the back of you he must have been moving faster than you on the same course and is therefore overtaking.

The master of a vessels first responsibility is to the safety of his vessel. Your emergency action is taken to preserve your vessel and it's safety therefore you are acting within the letter and the spirit of the internationally recognised regulations. Furthermore the skier is in direct breech of the same reg.

There you are, thousand's of pounds of legal advise for the price of a phone call.

ChrisP

P.S. If you want to avoid the court process. When he falls off, hold him under with the boat hook for 5 mins then bugger off quick.

Perhaps some of us aren't able to spend as much time as others on here and therefore don't know exactly what has or has not been discussed, or do you have to be a regular and have intimate knowledge of the forum to post a question? Sorry to have impinged upon your time , before I have another question, not a soapbox there are enough of them on here already, I will have to ensure I have read everything on here in case I assault anyones sensibilities.

I back you on that rermark Planty - there is a sort of old boys censorship that can happen on the site and should be resisted. Your post was a perfectly reasonable one - the fault lies with those who sit and snipe :-)

I assume you are referring to this, when a whole load of RIBs came past Hurst point with Jet skiers messing about on the wake of phantom 46 and generally having fun. They were certainly mad but very entertaining.

Paul & Planty.
I'm not making snipes at anyone
(Apologies Planty, only just seen how many posts you have made, maybe you haven't seen the amount of posts just lately re: jet skis)

In the last few weeks there have been an almost relentless stream of anti PWC posts. I, for the life of me can't see why people are getting so worked up about them.

Since the current crop, I have carefully been watching their activities. They produce little or no wake, even at speed. The ones I have seen have all slowed down to -4knts through anchorages and near shore.
I Counted at least 6 or 7 in Swanage last W/E, about 5 or 6 in Bembridge W/E before all behaving properly.
You will of course see the odd loony, but hand on heart, I have more of an issue with pillocks like the speedboat a couple of weeks ago towing a waterskier between all the boats at anchor in Totland bay, despite there being swimmers in the water.

There are just as many stupid, inconsiderate motor boats and sailors (without wishing to open a whole can of worms again)
PWC owners are no worse (or better) than the others
The best I can come up with is they're a noise nuisense. BTW I don't & won't own a PWC. I just wish this current hate campaign would die a death.
