Didn't do a very good job of filling in those 6 holes in the transom! The yard could have tried harder to match the existing colour and grain better. Not that I know much about yachts but is that where the original tiller operated transom hung rudder used to be?

Max Aitken's old boat. I remember her in racing trim from 1960 onwards. A real performer, and a heritage yacht.

Err, no Mike, that's the backing pad for the existing backstay as per photo 2. It matches fine in the real world. When the 14 coats of varnish are new, the six bolt covers are darker than the surrounding hull (as per photo 3) - when at about half age, they about level, when coming up to renewal time (i.e. the ones you are looking at are 13 years old) then the heads are lighter than the surrounding hull. I like to see the construction, others like tons of filler covered with gel coat or Awlgrip, each to their own.;)

Ah OK understood! As I say I dont know much about saily yachts!

Incidentally, there is 30,000lbs max load on that little wooden chain plate (59,000lbs on the shrouds in pic 3) - I like to be able to see any movement - it's amazing that there is none, not even a tiny crack in the varnish!

Steve

Ps. I feel very naughty posting all this in here - oh well, MapisM's fault. ;)

What a beautiful yacht and obviously much loved. :)

I love the look of wooden yachts/boats but not sure that I could deal with the upkeep.

My.... absolutely lovely yacht! We can also imagine that she's quick given the numbers you mentioned.

BEAUTIFUL!! Enjoy as much as you can :-)

That is stunning! How long have you owned the boat?

We have owned her just under 4 years. She was built in 1957 at Clare Lallow's (Cowes) and had a very significant refit in the late 80's / early nineties at Berthon (top job).

So far I have done the following;

1. Strip engine and re-build - it's just done a 200 hour run virtually non stop without any oil or water loss or other issues so box ticked.
2. Strip gearbox and re-build - it used 14 gallons of oil on the 24 hour maiden trip as all the seals had gone hard and one set of clutch plates knackered - sweet as nut now.
3. 1000 A/H Rolls domestic battery bank, two banks of Optima Blue tops for engine start / thruster (interchangeable), heavy duty S500 Merlin power centre, all new switchboards and wiring, approx 300 individual wires, all black, all cut off, and all unmarked replaced! New 170amp 24v alternator, 3kw Victron inverter, Isolation transformer fitted.
4. All hydraulics (winches, furling, anchor etc.) motors and pumps stripped and re-furbed.
5. Mast out and painted, all rod rigging either replaced or re-headed.
5. 50% of running rig replaced.
6. Sails as new so nothing required (Pete Sanders makes good sails!).
7. All cabins stripped and re-painted, re-upholstered, new lights.
8. New domestic and bilge pumps throughout.
10. New nav pack, 3 x GPS Chart plotters, radar, AIS T/X, weather fax, Icom 605 vhf's, Structure scan etc. all linked to 24" touchscreen at chart table.
9. Cockpit, doghouse and deck gear all varnished (14 coats) - Hull varnish is starting to go and is next on the agenda.
10. About 1.01 million other little things as is usual.

All done by ourselves (me, wifey, daughter) except the live 240v stuff, the gas cert, and the rod rigging terminals.

Next up steering gear and hull varnish. We are about 75% there I reckon. We no longer have fingernails.

lovely looking yacht Drumbeat. We had a college trip from Southampton to Berthon when I was on the 'Yacht & Boatyard Management' course which would have been late 80's and I'm sure I saw her then, timescale probably fits.
