If I'm off for long periods on the boat, for some reason tales of derring-do such as Smeetons and Moitessier don't appeal. This year I've been getting thro a fair few thrillers. A cut above average were:
The Debt to Pleasure by John Lanchester. The blurb said "sinister...learned....laugh out loud funny" and it was. Very good indeed.
The Aberystwyth noire series by Malcolm Pryce. Younger son put me onto these. Expected it to be a single conceit worked to death but again it's surreal in places, very funny and very well written.
I tried summat by Peter Ackroyd again. And gave up again. I should have known.
