The Nasa Log installation thread has me thinking ....

My aluminium Soviet mobo has no units for speed or depth and I have idea to fit. First consideration is the hull will not be suitable for E/S to signal thru. So that will need mounting to have clear unobstructed path. The paddle wheel log could be mounted through hull - but being a mobo that often gets dragged up the bak ... and with no 'keel(s)' ... makes the head vulnerable to damage.

I've looked at Pitot tube speed gear designed for speedboats ... but by time you buy pitot .. piping and pressure head ... it starts to not look so cheap. (This is PBO ... not Cheque Book Boating)..
I have a hand held fish finder that has a mount to fix to transom .. but wish to keep it fully portable and not fixed.

So taking the Pitot and Fish Finder mount ideas ... they use a 'kick-up' bracket so when boat grounds ... they pivot up out of the way.

Looking for ideas to maybe do same for a Nasa Clipper Duet kit !!

Thoughts I have are E/S one side and Paddle wheel other side of transom ... I even thought of having a length of rigid plastic pipe clipped to tramson for each sender mounted on end ... cables fed through pipes into boat ..

Here's the boat so you can see the setup :

My first thought would be a gizmo a bit like the fold-up wheels on tenders - a bit of square SS channel, some SS tube to fit inside with a bolt as a hinge and some sort of clip to hold the tube up and down, but so the down one, at least would break free on impact. Mount the transponders on the bottom of the tube and fit the whole lot on the transom, as far away from the engine as possible.

One other thought. It's more expensive, but NASA does do an electromagnetic log transponder with no moving parts. It would be a good nit less vulnerable to damage than a paddlewheel. though probably not invulnerable.

Do you actually need STW? Wouldn’t SOG do? If so get a cheap fishfinder with GPS, transom mount the transducer and you have depth/COG and SOG.
Something like this LOWRANCE HOOK²-4x GPS Bullet Fishfinder with Skimmer Transducer Hook2 - 000-14015-001

I already have SOG ... I have an Etrex I put in a phone holder .... which with the handheld fishfinder gives me a partial solution.

The reason for STW - is to note the reduction of speed produced by the motor. I noticed a drop of about 1kn last few times out ... SOG doesn't give me that.

The other factor is that I already have the electronics - its the mounting that's the question...

Stemar .... mmmm just wondering how it would look ...

Something like one of these, but with transponders on the bottom instead of a wheel?

That's what was in my mind ... but don't you think it a bit 'big' ??

One idea that crossed my mind was a bicycle or door kick down ... sprung to flip up .. overcentre spring to hold down ..

Today I had to resolder connections on my trickle solar panel on that boat. I noted that when I have the cover over the seats (I have BMW seats in back .... Volvo seats in front !) ... the panel is partly shaded. I wondered whether to go back to my plastic pipe clip idea .. I could clip my solar panel to a pipe while moored ... unclip when I'm going to use baot and clip senders in its place ?
