Newport is a really nice town. Quite a few decent bars if you turn right along from where the water taxi stops up Thames Street. I recall even getting a decent pint of Guinness there.

Bluewater Books and Charts is on Thames Street as well and is worth a look in while you're there.

If you're looking for anywhere to haul in the area I'd recommend Brewers at Wickford which is across the other side of the bay from Newport, around the islands. Ask for George. He's very casual about you doing your own work if you want to.

There are also free moorings at Wickford provided by the town just inside the breakwater. Well worth remembering if you do a circuit of Narraganset Bay for a stop off. Wickford has some nice little shops and restraunts too. Take your dinghy into the town if you stay on the moorings, there is a dinghy dock right behind a supermarket where you can provision and there's a good coffee and cake shop across the car park from it.

You may have stopped at Block Island on the way in? If not it's a superb little island with a large bay accessed through a narrow chanel. It gets chokka with boats in summer and lots of merriment to be had. A guy comes around the anchored boats every day shouting 'Andiamo' - he's selling freshly baked croisants and muffins.

I took this flying over Block Island last year. The compact cloud of boats on the right are on moorings, the big patch on the left are anchored.

Martha's Vineyard I found so-so after Newport and Block Island. Nantucket is great to visit with the whaling history etc. Watch the holding in the grassy areas there. It's the only place I've ever dragged. It was filling up with moorings when I was there in 2005.
