Over the last decade + .... the advances in battery tech for portable gear has been ballistic.

For ages we have wired up gear on board using our Lead Acid batterys or whatever. But now we have battery packs that not only power high load gear - but have large capacity and charge up quickly at high rates.

Because I get to use various battery forms in my hobbys - it has often crossed my mind as to creating individual packs for gear. Removing old NiXX tech or all that wiring from the main Lead Acid batterys.

Be realistic - I am not talking about powering your fridge .. air con or so on ... but the lesser demand gear such as sounders / gps etc.

I have somewhere under a bench - an old Seafarer Sounder that had either 12v from boat battery - or internal 9v lantern battery,

Anyone else ??

Why not, if it works instead of standard batteries? They are expensive though, so there are some cost realities. Maybe you could spread the cost over other hobbies. These sorts of things are nice to have rather than necessities.

Idea is something I am mulling over with a pal of mine ... we both are into RC Models and battery tech is a serious part of it.

Having used 'tired' lithiums to replace torch Nixx's etc - we were looking at other uses. With LiPo / LiFe etc. - the physical size of packs vs their capacity etc. is good. Both of us also use 18650 ... and 21 size cells to create packs for various use - my Soloshot cameras have 18650 packs velcro'd to the side, backing up the poor battery internal SS fitted.

As I say - its for the lower power stuff .. it can increase portability on board or just provide Mobile phone charging in forecabin etc. ....
