20 hours out from Solent to Falmouth.. bleeding alternator bracket breaks..
We needed a cunning plan...
I can recommend Barton blocks as being fairly bullet proof.. lasted 16 hours with the odd kettle ful of water and a spray of wd40 to lubricate it.. (No wind !)

Just looking through some old piccies lol /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Impressed to see such ingenuity and self reliance. Much easier jury rig than persuading SWMBO to take her tights off and use as a temporary shorter belt /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Refreshing change to the PC approach which could have been.....

1. Send out a mayday
2. Scuttle boat as it represents a danger to shipping
3. Take to the liferaft
4. Write article for yachtie magazine on near death experience.
5. Have MAIB inquiry into incident to produce more safety regulations/best practice
6. Take legal action against bracket Manufacturer
7. Sign off sick with post traumatic stress disorder

Funny old world aint it? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Excellent! Your system looks much easier to tension than the 'conventional' way of doing it.
Maybe it will set a trend?
Unfortunately it wouldnt work for our boat, as we dont have any convenient carlines or beams handy, just a removable box over the engine.

Note to self.
Look into getting one of those adjustable emergency belt jobbys that you cut to length. Seem to be like a rubber bicycle chain with links.

Handy to remember for my OM636, ingenious idea.

(PS the ballast resistor on the glowplug supply looks in a similar condition to mine just before it nearly set fire to the wiring - I killed the power when I saw the smoke. I now use 12V plugs)

Hi Damo, mine has smoked for years !!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

usually the silly dash indicator (Glow) goes short, this overloads the BR..

ps, what type of 12v plugs did you get ? and do you wire them in parallel ??.. not come across those before...
More info please.

Thanks Damo

Did a tad of googling and found a link to this..

They fit a VW TDI motor. The Bosch number is:
GN 912 0100226188. You can probably cross reference to a common brand there.

I'm making a plug for a grp instrument console as we speak - the engine instruments are moving from low in the cockpit to the companionway bulkhead, and rewiring the lot cos the interior of the loom was in a bad state (25 yrs of movement = lots of wear)

Looking at your jury rig I may glass in a fixing point for a block while the engine is out and the new sound insulation isn't in yet....good timing cap'n /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
