July MBM boat comparison

Reading the boat report on the Sunseeker Portofino 35 and the comparison with the Sealine S38, I notice that the the boat weight for the Sunseeker is 2.7 tonnes heavier than the Sealine. That said, the Sunseeker performance figures are much better than the Sealine (with the same engine hp.)
Is it a typo error regarding the Sunseeker displacement, or does it mean that the Sealine hull creates a much greater drag than the Sunseeker hull ?

Without going back to read it again, didn't they cover that in the article? Sunseeker has a finer hull, less beamy

The weights are wrong as comparisons and the speeds are wrong comparing their own data. There are several other factual mistakes in their report which I am assured will be retracted.

As GBW points out I have to stick my hand up and admit to some inconsistencies between the text and performance tables.

A production glitch meant that in the text we stated that the Sunseeker was 2.5 secs quicker from idle to 25knots than the Sealine. As the performance tables correctly indicate, it was in fact only 0.5sec quicker to this speed.

The question of weights is a trickier one as the figures published are those quoted by the respective manufacturers. However, we suspect that Sealine may be quoting a dry weight (the factory is on holiday at the moment so I haven't been able to confirm this) whereas Sunseeker quote a weight with half load (which in this case pushes the weight up by an estimated 500kg). In future we will ask manufacturers to state clearly what parameters they use to calculate the weight

Either way the bottom line is that the Sunseeker is still quicker and heavier. We can only conclude that this is due to the Sunseeker's narrower, more efficient hull. A quick glance at the performance tables shows that at an indicated 3000rpm the Sunseeker is cruising at 28.5knots compared to the Sealine's 25.0knots while it is 4.8knots quicker flat out.

Neither of these facts change our rating or opinion of the boats, both of which were fully deserving of their 8/10 scores, albeit for the different reasons explained in our verdict.

I think some of the maths used to calculate the range figures were incorrect as well.
