Jubilee flotilla coverage - why did the BBC get it so wrong

i was disappointed with tom cunliffe, he should have taken the opportunity to explain the technicalities of the differnet boats, unfortunately he was as bad as the rest of the tossers, he hadnt done his homework OR they wuldnt let him talk!!
stu

I think the main challenge facing Tom was he was there to talk about boats on screen....and there weren't any!

Well there were loads to begin with but by the time the babies and Battersea park had been seen the only thing shown moving for any amount of time was the with her maj on board. Whith had been spoken about so all Tom was really left to talk about was the boat handling.

Such a great opportunity missed

Kerenza, you echo what I am hearing from the sacred portals of the Beeb, armys of researchers had done months of research, had compiled briefing notes both on paper and electronically for the benefit of the programme makers, very little of which was used.

There are quite a lot of seriously pissed off staff at the moment, they know it was a disaster and feel badly let down.

But will the top brass ever admit that, or will they in normal fashion spin their way out and keep allowing the perpetrators to trouser their gross salaries as if they had done well.

In reality we need a new DG who will go through the whole bloated self serving operation with an axe that would make the late Dr Beeching wince.

Afraid even a Dr. Beeching approach can't do anything now.
The wheels on the bus have been sold and while there's plenty of room on top in ain't going anywhere.
Just wait till we all get local TV as promised - at least we can go sailing!

H20 Show podcast

BBC Radio Solent's H2O Show have done a podcast from the pageant, it's lots more interesting and informative than BBC live team were on the day itself and well worth an hour's listening:

For example - we learn each section of the flotilla had a commander empowered to call an emergency stop if needed - and that if a MOB happened the boats were advised not to turn back but instead let the boat following pick the casualty up. And lots of interesting background on the owner of Spirit of Chartwell. Excellent show.

Exactly that- to publicly and unambiguoulsy express disapproval. I'm all for that and I signed it accordingly. If a loud enough call, some action at the BBC might follow and if nothing else it might serve " pour encourages les autres" to stop something equally as bad happening on another occasion.:(

a royal wedding where they spent more time filming the crowd outside than the proceedings inside

Wimbledon final where they break away mid serve for a chat with a person selling strawberries.

damn good ideas those two. definitely make the events a bit more interesting.

I'm not sure the Beeb got anything wrong with their coverage. Its impossible to make a boring non-event into an interesting event just by what you say about it. And they wouldnot have been allowed to point out how daft and ruritanian it all was, so what else can they do but what they did?

Okay, this is getting a bit weird and obsessive now!

Yes, and who's going to take any notice of a badly worded petition with a few dozen or even a few hundred signatures? All a bit pointless IMHO.

I do not think it was totally the BBCs fault-I feel that the overall organisation of the event was poor-why not the Queen in a rowed barge with emergency engine? then everyone could have kept together.
Why could the entourage not run past the moored sailing vessels down river?
Having said that no one at the BBC has yet explained the presence of mutant eels paddling a NewZealand War canoe?
At least thats what Morays are and if the commentator meant Maori then the BBC should be apologising to the Maori that were paddling the said canoe and the intimation that they were unfriendly and agressive.
Thats when we switched off!

A proper apology. Simply holding up their hands and saying "Yes, no excuses, we dropped the ball on this one. It was a one off event, and we made a mess of it. We are truly sorry, and will learn the relevant lessons."

Would be a hell of a step for me.

Out of interest, why was one of the ribs accompanying SoC wearing a Canadian ensign?

Are you sure it was a Canadian ensign? With my [limited] knowledge of royal protection matters; in public engagement duties members of the security services that are armed wear small lapel badges with a red circle on a white background to identify themselves to other members of the team. Are you sure this wasn't what was represented on the 'ensign' on the rib in question? Perhaps to similarly identify them to other service personnel as armed protection officers?

Seems logical to me.

Fairy nuff! As I said, just a thought. Makes sense to me though; what's the point of having a Commonwealth if they're excluded from the fun and glory of something as big as this?
