Jubilee bunting on boats

was in B & Q earlier and saw they were selling jubilee union jack bunting, and was tempted to get some to put on the boat for our 'jubilee holiday' river cruise - what does the forum think?
good bit of fun or just tacky?

I think its a great idea and will be doing something simular. The only resivation am I transgressing royal protocol ? I long time ago (charles=diana weddinging) I had a hire fleet based in Hampton, the local garage gave me loads of Union Jacks ,so I thought it would be nice to dress the weekly hire fleat. They looked splendid as they left the yard.
When they returned a week later not one bit of bunting, they were asked to take them down because the Thame Conservancy told them that the only boat that could fly the flag had to have the queen on it.Never found out if that is true, anyone know ?

The Union Flag (correctly known) may only be flown at the jackstaff (hence Union Jack) of one of HM's Warships, when at anchor or alongside, during the hours that the ensign is also flown (0800 to sunset/2100)

Precence of HM irrelevant; so TC not all together correct, either.

Pump-Out

Well i will be flying them and if some nobber tells me to take them down then he/she will be told where to go . Its a bit of fun not the weekend for anal idiots to spout off .
I may even fly my pirate bunting aswell yaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrr .

To add to my last comment having driven and walked extensively through town in the last few days I can assure you there is not a building that has not been dressed up, Harrods and Harvey Nicks looks particularly good!

I also got a good hour to look at Hyde Park Corner this morn...schoolboy error there...

As a matter of interest has anybody seen a Nat West with any bunting/flags etc. Historically as part of RBS they have been forbidden to celebrate anything English!! Spoke to the Weybridge Branch who have nothing on display unlike other premises around them, and despite my protestations about the 80%public ownership of the the Bank and the fact that this is a Royal event they said patheticaly they had not had any instructions on Bunting or Flags.
(Did not put this in the lounge deliberately)

Possibly - expecting a backlash of "spending money when the group is bust", 83% owned by the government, etc etc; Head Office decided "No"??

Time NatWest became NatWest again...

We have bunting being delivered tomorrow. (I was on nights so go it online). We decided to go for red white and blue triangles instead if flags as not sure on the protocol.

Now just need to find a mooring on Saturday, as taking grandad for his first overnight voyage.. :D

Don't know about white borders but it is a fact that it remains a criminal offence under the Merchant Shipping (Registration, etc.) Act 1993 to display the Union Flag from a British ship. Thank goodness it's not enforced on the Thames or we'd all be in the clink.

International code flags went up yesterday evening :)

And they're in the right order :D

Seem to be the only boat in Penton Hook that's bothered so far :(

am i right in saying that a union jack when flown at sea should have a white border. the one without is a land flag and should not be flown on a boat.?

Well sort of -
An Union flag with a white border is known as a pilot flag, and is a permitted flag when flown from the jack staff. It is either to request a pilot or flown when under the control of a pilot (not sure which). Irrelevant nowadays when everything is done by radio, but it is still on the statute books. It's not valid to wear it on an ensign staff at the rear of a boat.

Doesn't matter a jot on the Thames. Nobody has ever been prosecuted for incorrect flag use on the Thames (now there's a challenge). However, sometimes it's nice to play the game and do things "correctly", but few folks care that much nowadays.

Pity

Dad was a Navy man through and through. It was instilled in me from an early age that things were done the right way. Still with me after all these years and bugs me when I see otherwise.

Like the guy a couple of days ago flying a union flag from his jack staff, and it was upside down too.

Im flying mine from the allotment shed ( the queen is in there ) As you come off the M3 London bound by the dairy . You cant miss it , its the highest one :D Dont forget to wave to my chickens :)

I think somewhere in our filing cabinet , there may be a 'warning notice' for flying the incorrect flag ...

Whether it is TC , NRA , TW or EA i can't remember though. I'll have a look when i get back to the lock.

Some years ago EA started issuing notices (well they did upstream) stating the Merchant Shipping Acts position and a poster was displayed on the notice board - there still one or two about. Must have been awhile ago as some lockies still wore their No:1s on suitable occasions.
Nowadays it's all been dumbed down and lockies are prevented from criticising boaters. (another shame as I've learnt a lot from lockstaff when being shown the error of my ways...).

Yes, in theory one can be prosecuted but methinks it needs a serving Naval Officer to collect evidence - would probably have top seize said offending item before a prosecution could be started.
I'd be interested to know whether lockies warranted status confers such rights (in which case it's not in the MSActs).

In the final analysis it's of no relevance on Inland Waterways and from the public awareness of boating it's great to have all sorts of colours displayed on the back end of a boats. I've just bought a few unusual ones and people stop to say "what the **** is that flag". Brings folks out of their shells, methinks.
