Hi.
I switched on my 8 year old JRC1000 today. The lights on all the buttons flashed a few times and then it all died. I tried the fuse and it is fine. There is power going to the set. The manual doesnt give meny clues. I was wondering if there was an internal fuse.? Any ideas or name of a service agent please.

I would double-check fuses and connectors in the main power supply. After a winter of dampness, corrosion can lead to symptoms like this. The radar goes through its power-up sequence and looks fine, until it tries to draw lots of power for the radar tranducer and can't get it.
 
Have you tried a reset?

Does sound like a bad connection in the supply somewhere, though - any 'in-line' fuse holders in the supply?

Thanks all. There is 12.9 v going to the radar so external fuses are fine. I had read the reset instructions but had not tried them as everything went blank and I presumed that it was dead I will see if it works but I doubt it. I will a bit of damp remover on the connection and try again. Unfortunately it will be another 2 weeks so you may not see the results of your advice. But thanks again

Ref the reset, I may have misunderstood this. I assumed the set had to be operational first and as nothing is illuminating at all that the procedure would not work. Does the reset work from an off situation, similar to rebooting a pc.?

Was this whilst the radar was flashing it's lights? If not, I'm not sure it proves anything - (please bear with me: I don't wish to come across as patronising, but I do want to be sure we're all talking about the same thing...)

The fault that Captain Scarlet & I think may be present is a *poor* connection, not a non-existent one, so that while there's no current being drawn by the radar (effectively 'off') the voltage will be OK. As soon as you hit the button on the radar, and the electronics wake up and start to draw current, the voltage drop across the *poor* connection becomes too much, and the electronics go to sleep again. It may do this several times in succession (the flashing lights??). I think pretty much as soon as the radar wakes up, it powers up a heater in the scanner which draws a fair current - this is before it is ready to transmit.

If you were to stick a multimeter across the power leads at the radar, you'd see (nominally) 12V with the radar off, a few dips as it tried to start up, then 12V again when it had given up and gone back to sleep. The multimeter on it's own doesn't draw anything like enough current to show up poor connections through a voltage reading.

Fuse holders, or plug & socket joints are the favourites for developing this type of poor connection - especially 'in-line' fuse holders in my experience!

By all means try the reset, but double check the supply.

On a completely different tack, are the connections between the screen and the scanner all OK? No idea what the display would do if they weren't, though.

The lights only flashed on the initial attempt to start up. Subsequent tries were fruitless for any sign of life at all. Electrics is a weak point of mine so I appreciate any advice which you are offering. I shall be noting all of this and trying again in a couple of weeks.( I live 160 miles from the boat). The fuse holder does appear a bit corroded, so I will clean everything up and try again. Many thanks
