We had our decks painted with Awgrip and their stupidly expensive Griptex additive in 2021. Since then, we have done 10,000nm and been living onboard full-time.
The Awlgrip paint and none slip additive is not durable. The high traffic areas are now slick and no longer safe. We want to replace the deck paint with another product.
Hemel and Jotun, both do a polybead equivalent none slip additive. We like the theory of polybeads as they suck up the paint such that any wear to the deck doesn't show through as a mass of black dots like you get with sand none slip additives. Does anybody have experience of the these two products side by side?
Jotun 2 pack paint is far cheaper than Awlgrip and I am not convinced Awgrip paint is the quality it once used to be. I would not go with Awgrip again. We plan to use Jotun 2 pack paint but we are not yet sure which additive we will use. It won't be the Awgrip Griptex or sand or aluminium oxide.
Being liveaboards, the boat gets about 5 times the use of a boat used for normal recreational sailing in the UK. We are a great test bed for lots of things, particularly deck paint.
If we can't get a definitive answer, we plan to paint the steps in the boatyard workshop with the two different paint additives in a jotun 2 pack paint so we can create a working test bed. It should then become obvious which is best
