Jotun antifouling feedback..

Didn't someone say early in this thread that they got away with using their coding certificate as proof of being professional?

No, it was proof that your boat was commercial.

Amusingly to me the name Mare Nostrum was Roman for 'our sea', the med, but isn't a nostrum a type of quack medicine known for being ineffective and sold by snake-oil pedlars? Jotun really are taking the pee.

I fear they have cocked-up in the leisure market.
Premium product to ZERO in one easy move = loss of market share

Nitromors has been made so weak recently I don't use it in my work. I consequently use a stripper which is labelled 'for professional use only'. What this means to me is that I had to email a letterhead and business details, such as website. The supplier then had to send a paper form which I signed and they now have on file for when I reorder. They check this every time. I cant remember all the ins and outs of the form, it basically relinquishes them of any liability if I breath in the fumes, dab it on my skin or drink it. It is very strong stuff and certainly does the job. It is not for sale to the general public because it has an ingredient that is 'banned' by EU for public use (prob because they would kill themselves with it and then try to sue someone)?

I can walk into my local autopaint suppliers (don't have to be trade) and pick up a can of Synstrip (stripper even more powerful than the original Nitromors) without any bother! It also is for 'professional use only', anyone seeing my spray painting attempts would definitely not call me a professional!

So if I order it through my company (that is VAT registered) and ask for it to be delivered to the company registered commercial address, it should be supplied? and I don't need a coded boat or a "Marine" business.
Same question here, I have a VAT registered business, but isn't marine related.

Mnnn. First comment is VAT registration is not needed. Many sole-traders such as myself are not, I think the turnover is over £60,000 per year for that to apply (been there got the grey hairs ).
My experience is as stated. Perhaps they have details on their website or on the can as my particular situation has: ' Restricted to Industrial Use and to Professionals approved in certain EU Member States - Verify where use is allowed' (quote )
The stuff I am using ( stripper ) contains Dichloromethane and Methonal and there is a recommended list of the conditions it must be used in.
This may not relate to antifouling but maybe its worth having a go? But I would imagine you would need to apply to the company or distributers for certification?

I was asked for my coding cert. as evidence of professional status, I didn't 'get away with it'. I'd originally asked for Seaforce to be delivered to an established boatyard for them to apply on my behalf. This was deemed unacceptable by Jotun's supplier, which is why I cannot accept any arguments based on h&s: Jotun's policy is purely a marketing device. Not sure where the VAT idea has come from, either.

'Professional' must be within the context of the subject I am sure, In this case paint application .... perhaps boat maintenance is acceptable.
The dictionary definition of the word 'professional' is .......
'Engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as an amateur'.
No vagueness there so that counts me out, officially I am not even a professional layabout anymore, unless I can call the pension a payment, it definitely is my main occupation.
Well now that is cleared up perhaps we need to stop getting each other at it !
Oh hang on a minute ! let me look up the word occupation, maybe there is some vagueness there that we can exploit ?

No good chaps !
The dictionary definition of the word 'occupation' is :

'A person's usual or principal work or business, especially as a means of earning a living; vocation'
Oh crumbs ... that has blown it.

I have found on the internet that this seems to be the case for nearly all the main paint producers of antifouling.
We all seem to be moaning about one paint company and all the other big brands have loads of antifoulings we can't buy as well !
Would you believe it !

K&J

PS I have something new we can have a moan about !!
Lets all start a having a go at the pubs and restaurants for not letting us have a *** inside ? Im sure its just them trying to make more money from us !
I think our local is well out of order ! Who do they think they are ? I have always been able to smoke in there ... why not now ?

Come on guys help me out here ...you all like a good moan about laws you don't like and can't change !!
