Our new (secondhand) boat came with a Jotron lifebuoy light attached. This is of the conventional thin cylinder, cone, thick cylinder, light pattern. It is stored thin cylinder up but floats thin cylinder down and a mercury tilt switch turns it on.

My question (at last) is about an elongated U shaped bit of plastic which clips loosely onto the extreme end of the thin cylinder. What's it for? It is tied into the lanyard which attaches the light to the lifebuoy, close to the light. I can't see that it's important but I wouldn't want to throw it away before you experts have advised me.

Thanks for reading this far...
Derek.

I have a similar product, and the 'U' shaped bit of plastic locates the light in the inverted position in the holder. When the lifebuoy is thrown overboard, the lanyard (attached to the U shaped plastic & light) pulls the U shaped pin out to release the light and all follows the lifebuoy over the side.

If this is not clear, I can send you an image of the arrangement of our system at the weekend when I next go down to the boat. Please pm me if you require this.

Hope this helps
David

David,
Thanks for that. The holder is missing so I'll need to arrange a replacement.
Thanks again for clearing it up for me.

As Discovery2 said the U clip is to hold the light in the Jotrun holder, it is pulled free when the lifebuoy/danbuoy is thrown. If you have another holder on the boat which the Jotrun fits into, the U clip is no longer required. Keep the light though, it is the only one I have found so far which doesn't fill with water in double quick time and fail.
