Is Rugby, not a Team Game???

Or is that where us Scots keep getting it wrong.

Sorry for non Boaty Thread.

It most certainly is and I think Johny is acutely aware of this. Remember he won Sports Personality of the year. A "personality" by definition is a person NOT a team.....

I'm a soccer man myself (although being a Crystal Palace fan, that must be a contradiction in terms at the moment!!) - anyway, re your post, I guess the reason that Wilkinson won the trophy was because he scored such an enormous number of points over both the world cup and the rest of the season, so, he was rewarded for his individual contribution to the succes of the team, and for the undoubted pleasure he as a consequence gave to the nation as a whole. The team themselves actually won the 'team of the year' trophy didn't they?

I've always understood it to be a team game, but the cult of the individual is everything nowadays (turns on tedious old f@rt-ometer). I suspect that Jonny W. (who seems like a self effacing, albeit rather boring, person) is probably extremely embarrassed by the fact that so much hullabaloo is focussed on him.

To turn it into a boaty thread, how can the BBC possibly claim to be reviewing the year's sport when it doesn't even mention the fact that Steve Curtis has just become one of a tiny handful of Brits to win a World Championship for the 5th time (even though his throttleman was a furriner)?

Pah!

I suppose its not just that..
Its the MBE as well and people saying Give him a Knighthood.

He wouldn't have got anything if it wasn't for the rest of the team.

Yes the England rugby team did superb but if its all about sports achievement of the year then surely its silly to single out and give it to a person who is part of a team, yes the team should have no doubt won team of the year. I wonder if the coverage of him would have been so great had the kick not been so late on in the game and England had won comfortably in the first half! ( I think the situation is going the same way as Geoff Hurst in 1966 when there we 11 players out on the pitch but he seemed to have most of the glory)

IMHO If it was purely on personal achievement then Paul Radcliffe should have won by a mile, she is fast becoming our greatest competing sports person in any field. But i thought sports personality of the year was about other areas other than purely achievement.

I agree with who said why no mention of boat racing? Surely some of the bravest sports people about ( except perhaps motorbike racers)
