One approach is to give a briefing like that suggested above, full of 'The Rules' etc., and answer all the questions - then when the hotshot racers get up to leave, quietly suggest those not interested in racing remain behind....

First race Lacombe 19', Howells 25', Lewis 25'. Hasler 25', the winner Chichester 39'. Howells raised it with Hasler before the off, Hasler kind of said he felt sorry for FC (all the weight, complexity, lucky if he makes it) and we need all the entrants we can get. Well, that's my version from what I read in Howell's book.

The comments about bigger boats reminds me of a couple at our club. When asked why the chose a particular new boat the answer was that SWBO had chosen it, because it had the largest heads compartments for its size of boat. ( she was a sizeable lady)
The club nickname for the boat was - "Bigaloo"
