You really need to learn how to set up, sharpen and use a plane...

I did actually use a hand plane for part of this, trimming the sides down almost to the level of the veneer surface. It was most pleasing, but the plane could have been sharper; I do own an oil stone, but tend to use a plane & chisel sharpener that fits in a drill. Perhaps I should get a diamond stone.
