Joining thin wires

Have to admit, my NMEA connections are choc-blocks inside small plastic boxes. I'm sure there are better ways of doing it, but I don't think this one is actually bad.

My mast wiring under the headlining is done like that. Then popped inside a small plastic bag. Been like that since the boat was built in 1990 and is as good as new.

However when I wired the autohelm the only shielded multicore cable I could find had conductors too fine for the buccaneer socket. I had to extend each conductor with a very short length of tinned internal hookup cable. Not ideal but sticky heatshrink helps.

Gel filled connectors. Absolutely magic. I am down to my last 50 or so from a box which I bought from a telephone guy in Florida. I don't know where you them in this country but they must be available and they are superb. Not very neat as they take a bit of space, but you will have no fear connecting the lightest of wires in the future.

Back in my youth I did torpedo trials and had to connect the wire dispensers to the torpedos. This was done by soldering the two together then covering with heatshrink. This was expected to survive at least 2 months in a flooded torpedo tube, exposed to full diving pressure and still work. If it did for that I suspect it will work fine on a yacht.
