I wonder how the manufacturers decide on service life of stuff like this. We used to have a Sureflo which packed up as the warranty expired. This came from a camping company. I was disappointed, but thought of it as 'camping quality'. We're onboard most of the year so our usage is more 'everyday domestic' than 'once in a while'. This was in April last year.

I decided that Shurflo was not a good replacement so bought a Johnson 5 gall per minute 42PSI replacement. This comes with a 3 year warranty, great thought I.

2 months after this friends of ours also bought a Johnson which had been upgraded to 5.2GPM. 4 months afterwards the pressure switch failed. They took the pump off and returned it to the marina for a replacement. It seems that Johnson's policy is to test pumps before issuing a replacement. The marina very kindly lent them a replacement one while theirs was being tested. :) It was returned with 'no faults' first time and subsequently returned to Johnson with a note about the pressure switch. This time they agreed that there was a fault and returned the pump along with a new pressure switch!! Our pals refused to accept this because it clearly says in the pumps paperwork that any interference with the pump will invalidate the guarantee. It did get sorted, but it does make you think.

The pressure switch on our pump has just failed. The pump is now 14 months old, with a design pressure of 42PSI as mentioned. Our calorifier has a pressure release valve pre-set at 4BAR, about 60PSI. With the failure of the pumps pressure switch, it doesn't stop. Instead, it keeps on venting the calorifier's hot water into the bilge through the PRV

I just wondered how common this fault is, or is it just coincidence?
