Hi folks new to the forum, and not sure this Q posted in the right place (any help appreciated).

I am trying to correctly identify my Johnson Outboard which has a 6.5hp engine cowling. Code on stamp is J7RSLP from what I understand this determines for the first part that it is 'J'for Johnson, '7' for 7hp, 'RS' for Rope Start, 'L' for Long Shaft, but the 'P' which i understand identifies year of manufacture, doesn't conform to the usual Johnson 'INTRODUCES' date code.

The serial is B002002. I understand this means it was manufactured in Belgium and is part of the commercial range of engines produced there. Does the 2002 part perhaps indicate it is 2002 year of manufacture? Problem is I once found a diagram of the exact same engine to source a carb air filter box, and now can't find it again. Can't determine year by comparison to any other diagrams, they all list Johnson engines as either 6 or 8hp but never 7 within the codes!!

Be so grateful if someone might shed some light on my dilemma.

Many thanks and great forums,

Marty

I stand to be corrected about this but I have had a Belgium made 8hp Evinrude and had similar problems to you. I also have a 3.5 Tohatsu in Mercury livery being touted as a 3.3 and I believe the Mariner version is different again. The difference I understand is is in some countries there are various restrictions and taxes based on hp. So for instance if your motor was designated to go to Holland they may have badged it 7 rather than 8hp etc as no engine falls exactly within that spec and I believe the tolerance is 10% or so, allowing them to round down to 7 etc.

Anyway, back on topic yours is the Johnson / Evinrude 6hp variant of my 8 hp and from 1984. You will find parts and diagrams here : http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1984&hp=6

Hi BruceK and thanks for taking the time to post a response. So i see, tax restrictions etc It does say on the badge that it was actually manufactured in Belgium? Might this be correct or imported then? Thank you again for the links, only problem is my particular engine is coded 'J7', but doesn't seem to matter whether i refer to 6 or 8hp diagrams they seem identical but dissimilar to mine. Still not able to source a carb air box/filter from these though as unavailable, guess best bet might be to refer to the auctions sites for a second hand one. I can't quite work out how the boz would sit on the front of the carb as there are no screw holes etc for attachment (and very little space in there alltogether tbh. I'm pretty new to this and more of a chainsaw 2 stroker than marine engine, i see many outboards pics without a filter on front of carb, is this common? I guess carb doesn't suffer so much with debris compared to the dust of a chainsaw environment but would seem sensible to have some sort of filter?

Yes some of the units were made in Belgium. Pity about the airbox, I recently threw mine out. They are not necessary and I removed mine for easier cold starting. Used to squirt a small amount of fuel directly into the carb choke and she would start first pull. The lift pump gets a bit weak at this age and trying to cold start her would take a bit of effort trying to get fuel through to the carb. I think the only difference between the 6 and the 8 was the carb.

edit

there is no filter, just the airbox.
