Hi everyone, someone just had a Johnson/Evinrude 18/25HP ( The tag has been removed ) for sale so upon inspection I noticed the cables from the spark plugs go directly back to the Stator, can anyone tell me if this is the norm on some models ???

Any idea of the age ?

Is it a very old one with points ignition ? That would have plug leads going directly to the coils under yje flywheel

Some later models ( 1990 ish onwards) have UFI (under flywheel ignition ). I believe that means that everything is under the flywheel but does not include the HT coils

I seen a 1973 25HP that looked exactly the same except that one had the two coils, perhaps this one is older, the chap that has the motor told me that he has a spark it was just when I looked I was amazed

Early ones did not have separate HT coils . A 1973 model had points ignition and separate HT coils. Not sure when they cahnged ithout trawling through parts lists

Need to know the model numbers.

That was the first thing I looked for as I have learnt a lot from you on this forum but it is missing, I have since foun out it is an Evinrude it's on the cowlin, but I have found a site online it's called Maintaining Johnson E & FD series 15, 18, and 20 HP 2 cycle outboards 1956-1973 ( Information & normal repairs, looks very informative and it shows photographs of the coils under the flywheel

You might find the model number on a core plug on the engine block. Sometimes the model number is there sometimes its not. I have no idea what determines whether its there or not Maybe it depends on the factory in which it was built.

That site is part of Leeroy's Ramblings. A good source of info especially for 9.9 and 15 hp engines

Parts diagrams and lists are useful.
For 1968 onwards The BRP parts website http://epc.brp.com/Index.aspx?lang=E&s1=da51b274-a715-42c7-b589-310b85a0ff72

For earlier the Marine Engine parts pages are also useful Evinrude Parts & Johnson Outboard Parts at MarineEngine.com
