Folks,

I have a 50HP Johnson outboard which is losing most of its paint on the whole leg....I understand this is a fairly common problem with some models/years but I was actually wondering whether it might be to do with a missing anode?

On the back of the horizontal fin there's a round fixing with a small fin pointing downwards....is this an anode? It's sprayed white so I'm not sure it is. At the front of the horizontal fin there are two tapped holes and it looks like an anode might have been fitted here at some point?

Any comments or suggestions welcome!

The little fin I think you will find is a trim tab. You adjust it like a mini rudder to offset the prop walk effect so that it goes straight rather than in a circle.

Have an idea that some also double as anode ... not sure about that though would have to check the model.

Old models did not have anodes. Anodes are a modern addition but sometimes added by bolting onto the anti-ventilation plate

What is the model number? If we know that ( or the year )we can look things up

Looks like anodes appeared in the early 1980's on 50 Hp models , but as an option at first

#77 in this diagram can be either a filler block or an anode

#63 is the anode in this later one http://www.boats.net/images/diagrams/brp/IMAGES/433788/22.png

and #23 in this even later 4 stroke one http://www.boats.net/images/diagrams/brp/IMAGES/5032938/EPC3211.png

OK, found the year and model....as follows;

05/2003
J50PLSTD

...does that help?
yes
J=Johnson, 50 = 50hp, P = power tilt and trim, L= longshaft, ST = 2003 (D is just a production suffix)

So it should have an anode behind the prop #56 in the diagram at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/JOHNSON/2003/J50PLSTD/GEARCASE/parts.html

and one (it only says one I thought there might be one each side) on the mounting bracket #26 here http://www.boats.net/parts/search/B...TD/EXHAUST HOUSING - STERN BRACKET/parts.html

Cannot explain the loss of paint. Might be a good idea to have a quick look at the electrical system esp any earthing leads.
