I've just inherited this with a boat I've bought. It has been used with the boat's tender.

It appears to be in good condition and turns over OK but I've not attempted to start it yet.

I'm not familiar with Johnson outboards so I could do with a few pointers please.

The model no. is BJ4BRCCS, serial no. B7642258 and it was purchased by the previous owner in September 1988.

Any idea where I could get hold of an owners manual too please?

Have you tried googling for one? 2/- o/b's are pretty well generic so near enough will do.

I have a 6hp of a similar vintage. I put it in neutral, set the throttle & choke to the marked positions & if it has fresh fuel it starts. Seemples

I've got what sounds like the same engine (the throttle control on mine is a slider on the front of the engine).

I haven't got the manual but I do know where to find an online parts diagram if you need it.

Mine runs really well and is very easy to look after.

PM me if you have any specific questions.

The model number confirms it to be a Belgium made 1988 model, standard (15") shaft length, integral fuel tank and no reverse gear.

You will find useful exploded parts diagrams in the electronic parts catalog at http://shop.evinrude.com/ Select Johnson from the drop-down menu, then 1988, then 4 HP then the model by number. BUT the nearest model listed is J4RCCS.

"H" models have a remote fuel tank "D" models have reverse gear and "L" models have long (20") shafts

Sadly no online manuals. All rights to manuals are owned by the Ken Cook Co Copies, and I stress copies, of the original manuals are available from there at www.outboardbooks.com but they are not cheap.

You may also find the model covered by the Seloc or Clymer series of manuals but they cover many models in one volume and can be very poor compared with the OEM manuals.

Worth reading with a motor new to you about which you may not know much history http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

I recently got good service from www.outboards-direct.co.uk (aka Oakley Marine ) in Brighton

In the past other formites have had good service from www.willsmarine.co.uk in Kingsbridge

Robin Curnow in Penryn and Fairweather Marine in Fareham have also both been recently recommended.

BTW run it on 50:1 fuel mix! Even if it has 100:1 label on it. From 1985 to 1988 OMC attempted to use 100:1 fuel mixes but realised it was a mistake and returned to using 50:1 including the '85 to '88 models
