Johnson 3.5 Outboard, I\'ve lost my Impeller!!

Having taken the good advice of PBO this month I have just completed a full service of my outboard (where'e the 'halo' smiley!!)

One thing, I can't find the water pump impeller!!

I've been told I need to remove the gearbox, but can't find anything in the manual/online to show me how. I am normally the adventerous 'take it all apart' type, but in my search for the impeller yesterday I removed the plate behind the prop and ended up with gear oil all over the patio!! (Thanks PBO!!)

Anyone put me straight on this, and no laughing, I'm embarrassed! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It's a Johnson 3.5HP, December 2000.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Johnson 3.5 Outboard, I\'ve lost my Impeller!!

Cant find a 3.5 hp otherwise Id give you a link to the diagrams.

If its not behind the prop then its on top of the gearcase. If you have FNR gears or even F&N neutral it will definitely be on top of the gear case. Modern ones with a fixed drive do have it behind the prop.

Sure you just removed a cover plate and did not pull out the whole pump assembly c/w bearing and seals/

Two diags to look at

3hp model with pump behind prop http://shop2.evinrude.com/Scripts/ImgSer...IF=P&ilRE=8

4hp model with pump on top of gearcase http://shop2.evinrude.com/Scripts/ImgSer...IF=P&ilRE=8
Note if you have to drop a gearcase with gear shift you'll need to disconnect the shift rod.

Proves one thing .... Cant rely on articles in comics!

you will have to split the gearbox from the leg, held on with wto bolts one from above one from below.
once they are out remove the bung in the side of the leg and slacken the bolt holding the gear linkage.
the gearbox should come off with the drive shaft included but it may take some wedging or prising gently to move it.

you will then see the impeller casing around the base of the drive shaft..

hope this helps

Thank you both!!

Looks like it's the same as the second diagram, I can see how to drop the gear case now, looks like a job for this evening.

Thanks again!!

[/ QUOTE ] You absolutely sure about that. Old ones were like that, other makes too but this one looks more like the rod will disconnect from the shift lever mechanism at the top.

Thanks for the heads-up, I'll check and report back, it may be of use to someone else.

Thanks.

Re: Johnson 3.5 Outboard, I\'ve lost my Impeller!!

Looks like you are correct about disconnecting from the lever at the top, there is no blanking plate to access the coupling. I can't see how to do this, I'll go back and have another look now, but in the meantime, if anyone knows, please shout!!

The selector lever is a simple neutral and forward.

HTH

Thanks!

Re: Johnson 3.5 Outboard, I\'ve lost my Impeller!!

OK, found it!!

All you do is undo the two screws and then pull!! The drive shaft, water pipe and gear linkage all just pop out. Easy enough to reconnect.

Many thanks to everyone who got me pointed in the right direction!!

If anyone else has a Johnson OB and has a problem, just shout, I'm an expert!! Ahem...
