Jobourg, Jobourg, AIS nightmare!

We were coming back from Guernsey back up to the Hamble and when we were off the coast of Alderney we got a few messages to call Jobourg on Channel 13 VHF on the AIS system. We removed about the first 10-20. Then we thought, okay, maybe they really do need to hear from us so I communicated with them, gave them our details.

Soon enough more alarms were sounding on the chartplotter. We had almost 100 when I called them again. They didn't seem very helpful.

By 150 I was very tempted to yell 'casse toi' over the VHF but I resisted.... yet they still didn't seem to care that we were being bomarded by alarms.

I called La Harg control on channel 10 for advice as to how we could stop the messages, but every few seconds our AIS alarm would go off (it isn't quiet) and it was really getting my temper up.

I tried every setting and tried to disable every available alarm on our AIS system but couldn't get rid of the things!

What on earth are these messages and how are the bloody French allowed to get away with such blatent marine SPAM?

Many thanks,

Sam

No I am not getting confused between AIS and DSC, Sam said specifically AIS messages, which can be a function when you have a transponder fitted. Most of the messaging can be turned off.
