Hi Guys

Just wondering if anyone has any feeddback on JMP marine pumps - Both my Sherwood 1730's on my 6BTA's are showing signs of imminent collapse so I want to get them replaced. I either go Seamax pumps from Seaboard marine - expensive but I know are good - but with recent changes to Australian imports gonna cost over 2200AUD for a pair.. or I can get the JMP locally for $615aud each - quite a saving! - I wont be going Sherwood as they fail all the while - but didnt know if JMP were an improved version or just straight Copy - I suspect they make the Seamax ones but will make them to SBMars spec..

Any feedback would be gratefully received.. as I can find none online - which is both worrying and reassuring!

Steve,

JMP are excellent pumps and good value.

I had a chance to talk with JMP MD a year or so back who was happy to dicuss technical details. JMP use Korean licenced John Crane seals, Sherwood do not use John Crane seals. I requested the bronze specification, two days later I was full spec in an email.

My reason for requesting material spec was that Cummins Darlington had issues with high lead spec on marine engines. Turned out that over 90% of lead content was due to so called bronze used by Sherwood which would account for the fact that on 10,000 hr plus B Series marine engines the pump body is shot, overhaul kit will not restore performance, replacing the pump is the only solution.

Seamax are not JMP, parts sourced from another supplier from Korea but not JMP and assembly in the U.S using genuine John Crane seals.

To counter the success of Seamax pumps Sherwood have adopted aggressive pricing but does not make up for its basic shortcomings.

Hope this helps

Thanks Paul excellent information there and it's much appreciated.

From what I have read 100 hours could be good going for the 1730 Sherwood, a truly dire performance record. It's good to know JMP are using correct materials and parts..

I have not even priced the Sherwood pump, I cannot see it being cheap here in Aus and even if it was cheap, I'd still be buying another in a few years. If I could afford it I would go seamax but with the aud being weak, 10% tax being applied at source due to new import rules, the seamax pumps are out of the ball park for now.

Thanks once again...

Steve
