I was pleasantly surprised to find 12mm marine ply in stock at my local Jewsons for £43 + vat. (65% off rrp). Its 7 ply Birch faced and excellent quality - a pleasure to use for the refit of my galley and head. Compare this to Homebase's 5mm 'exterior' ply at £12 for a 2 x 4 sheet that fell apart after 12months even though varnished - total rubbish.

I also fitted the excellent Blakes Lavac Popular, (electric model) in place of the 30year old Jabsco manual loo and a designer basin in place of the plastic one.

The old calorifier is being replaced with a Truma TT2 mains powered 5L water heater. Its only 300 watts and heats the water to 60-65c which is perfectly adequate for my needs. (and could be run from an inverter with the engine running to make up for the lack of the calorifier)

I've got a sheet of it,also from Jewsons.I used it for seat bases, various pads etc-all epoxy sealed then 2 coats of varnish.. It's NOT proper marine ply. I left an unepoxied offcut outside and it's started falling to bits.

I thought BS 1088 said more about the sort of glue used and lack of voids than the sort of wood. What's wrong with birch anyway?

To the OP: I always try to be nice to people, especially as I can't stand yoghurt.

Birch does not have the level of resistance to fungal attack required by BS1088

I think BS1088 only applies to ply made from tropical hardwoods.

If it helps, I've use Wicks Exterior Grade Plywood (8ft x 4ft, 10mm thick)

Edges double-sealed with PVC glue.
Then the whole lot coated with a wax-based preservation.
It has made a lovely weather-proof hen house, and my hens are very happy in it.

What do you mean, this is a boating website?

They do sell WBP ply as well but I'm not using it outside so should be fine. To be honest, at that price I would not be surprised if it was not BS1088, but then I didn't ask for that.

Time will tell I suppose, but it will out last me!

I've seen worse looking boats!:p

Whoops - I should have said it was directed to "Nos4r2" - the second post in the thread and not to the OP. Brain fade - I though his was the first post and obviously that was you.

Its a response to the morse code he put at the bottom of his reply.
Damn, I forgot that was there :D

It was sold to me as 'marine' , not WBP. Ply, not yoghurt!

The floor of my Estonian made 'builders' trailer is naked birch ply, that brown stuff that looks like Tufnol, it has been exposed to Scottish weather continuously now for 11 years and also has been subject to heavy surface abrasion about seven years ago when a neighbour used it unprotected to shift loads of rubble. I tried painting it after that but that has rubbed off. It has convinced me that birch ply is very durable indeed.
I would have no hesitation using it indoors in a boat.

That's Buffalo Board. The ply itself may well be birch, but the top layer is a phenolic sheet - actually probably pretty similar to Tufnol. Normal birch ply will not have the same resilience.

No, its birch ply with a phenolic resin adhesive, if the top layer had been a fabric based sheet I should have resisted the rocks much better than it did. I have a part sheet of similar stuff in my garage, my Finnish built boat was delivered with the keel sitting on it and it is brown all the way through but definitely birch from surface to surface. Great stuff though, I wish I could get more.
