Re: A sailor...

For gods sake Robin, Didn't you pay any attention to the recent threads where pwc users came onto these forums to defend themselves, and despite all the abuse thrown at them were moderate and put forward good and reasonable arguements. They went back to their own forum disgusted with the treatment they were given, though a few of us visited them there, and encouraged them to continue.

You may have seen a minority behaving badly, but I've seen raggies behaving badly too, and don't condemn you all because of that.

I have no argument Brendan with anyone until they show that they have no respect for others and that goes for all and of whatever persuasion. Badly behaved raggies were not the topic of this post any more than were badly behaved mobos but if they were would be both equally criticised.

As I already said, my post was to counter the claim that PWCs were a misunderstood group and not deserving of their bad reputation IN POOLE. Well the bad ones may well be the minority but I'm afraid in Poole they don't seem like a minority at all. As a result I am afraid most of us who cruise out of Poole whether sail or power expect bad behaviour from them all like it or not, and are rarely disappointed. If they want things to change then they need to DO something about it, coming onto a forum and saying things are better is fine and dandy but read my lips NOTHING HAS CHANGED. They still chase the fast ferries like mad dogs chasing cars, they still spoil Studland Bay for anyone wanting a peaceful stop for lunch or for a swim off the boat, they still slalom in and out of the moorings and the incident I referred to of them (3 together) tearing through our marina was in July this year, just a few weeks back.

I will say that we spent a couple of nights in July anchored off Swanage and there were plenty of PWCs about there too. The difference was amazing, they went off the slip and straight off the beach at 90 degs and slowly out to beyond the speed limit markers before doing their thing and when they returned were equally well behaved.

Why the big difference between Swanage and Poole? Is it that Poole is within easy drive of London and attracts the PWCS that are banned from other places like Chichester or what? Your boat is Lymington based and Lymington I believe has no PWCs in common with a lot of other Solent harbours, so you encounter them mostly in open waters and mostly away from anchorages. In Poole we have them in the moorings, in the anchorages, in the entrance, in Studland Bay, off all the beaches and in fact the place least likely to have them is their 'designated area'.

What? You think I just loiter around Lymington, and never actually go to places like Poole?

The Queen has been here too but I don't imagine she knows everything either. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

A little self righteous!

Robin,

Your posts seem a little self-righteous and I think you lost much of the argument with your balding , penis substitute, quote

Your disdain for PWC users is clear; you obviously have a personal vendetta against ALL PWC users.

There will always be idiots out there, so why raise your blood pressure. In my view not even licencing will curb some of the more excessive antics of PWC users.

Of course if they irritate you so much, you also have the option to move elsewhere, where there are fewer or no PWC.

BUT THEY ARE THE MINORITY, so live with the fact and move on!

Re: A little self righteous!

Derf

Why do my posts in here sound self righteous? Or is it simply that I don't agree with your laid back let the idiots do as they will view?

My description of PWC riders in Poole was factual in general terms. These are not kids, they appear to be 30 - 40 year olds and their enjoyment apparently requires the maximum number of spectators, otherwise why do they stay along the beaches and not go out to sea? And yes, although in Poole they hunt in packs each usually has a solo rider so presumably their significant others are missing. So 'balding loners posing on their penis substitutes' seems a very fair description to me of what we see in Poole.

For the record since your interpretation of my views is not totally correct, I DO NOT WANT LICENCES, even for Jetskis! My point was that if they continue as they are licences become a big possibility and it won't end with PWCs either. Has it escaped your notice that the courts have now recognised PWCs as 'ships' and therefore subject to Colregs? I believe the berk that brought that ruling about by his antics is now serving a prison sentence.

Why too should I move somewhere else for chrissake? Poole is my home, I LIVE here, WORK here as well as sail from here. Most of these posers arrive from out of town, wreak their havoc and leave.

My blood pressure too is fine, but thank you for your concern.

So we had best agree to disagree methinks. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: A little self righteous!

I take your points - but don't generalise all PWC users as being bad - as you are including me in that statement!

I observe the rules, however as a result of the rogue element when I choose to visit Poole (I normally ski from Lee-on-the-Solent) for a change I get charged £6, when small speed boats, some smaller than my PWC, but just as fast launch free of charge.

It also makes me chuckle and annoys me to see those speed boats breaking just as many rules as some of the rogue PWC users, usually wearing no safety gear whilst all the PWC users are kitted up, insured and displaying hull markings which can identify them. These small speed boats have none of this.

Bottom line, all sports, all water activities have those who cause trouble.

Poole should either charge and check insurance details for everyone, or no one at all. Luckily I don't visit Poole very often.

Back on our "jetski forums" one member raised a very good point: Why should 'I' have to apologise for another PWC users bad behavour?

These problem water users (note I mean all types of water user) are everyones problem, we should all team together and deal with them, rather than these rather pointless discrimanatory charges which achieve nothing except for rasing additional funds for habour masters.

I hope pressure from all water users will soon cause those with authority to start identifying the rogue element and deal with them - which is something thankfully we are starting to see happen.
