Jet Ski\'s again !!

I see in YM a letter about a very similar incident to mine some time ago ..... Jet Ski's doing sliding turns dumping water and spary all over cockpits and boats ......

When will this menace be sorted ? I know its difficult to catch these louts, but unless something is done about it - someone is going to get hurt.

The incident involving my boat actually had the jet ski miscalculate his turn and he hit the side of my boat, my wife who is not the best on boats was nearly overboard - as we were handing the mainsail at the time etc. I called the CG and reported direction and estimated speed etc. AND offered to prosecute if necessary. As they disappeared across the solent, others called in saying same was happening to them ..... albeit without the 'collisions' ......

Enough is enough - hang em high ..........

Re: Jet Ski\'s again !!

Happened to me some time ago, when jet skier was trying to impress my daughter and lost control and whacked into the back of the Hillyard 18 tonner we were sailing at the time. Needless to say it was an uneven contest, 1.5 inches of mahogany and 2.5 inches of oak frame unscathed - jet ski written off.

You were lucky to have enjoyed the sight of a Jet Ski written off .... but it's a bit daft really - in your case you then are presented with the scenario of being a saviour / rescuer !!

I realise that we all like different things and get our kicks in many different guises. But to interfere with anothers enjoyment, and judging by the letter in YM - which shows same as what happened to me - the driver gets heightened kicks by the sheer act of OUR anger etc.

Its a pity that trailed ropes don't affect Jet Skis !!!! so I believe. Otherwise a few well placed polyprops could clear the waterways !!!!

But surely it would be an adequate defence to say you were too busy p***ing yourself laughing to render assistance?

Re: Jet Ski\'s again !!

Ropes do affect jetskis. They get sucked up the intake and wrap round the drivesahft stopping them PDQ. But I didn't tell you that.

Most jetski's are data tagged when new and have their registration number on either side of the hull so, if you are being agravated by one, try and get the number and file a complaint to whoever runs the local launch ramp.

Being a jetski owner myself I get to see many of the a'holes you are on about but please don't make the mistake of tarring us all with the same brush. I spent a very pleasant 15 minutes chating to a yottie one evening off Herne Bay after approaching at a 'sensible' speed. I also assisted in the rescue of a crew of a small dinghy that overturned in rough seas. They could not right the dinghy and were starting to get very cold so 2 of us took them back to shore then returned and got a line on their boat and arranged a tow from a passing fishing boat. We do have our uses!

When we are being subjected to more and more controls and regulations its makes you laugh when the average Jet skier bombs around with little regard for any regulations and appears to get away with it.
There are exceptions as pointed out but we tend to remember the idiots charging through the moorings just missing craft at anchor or destroying the tranquility of a bay with complete disregard to the enjoyment of others and to add insult to injury they even wave.

Re: Jet Ski\'s again !!

Hey Trevor, I'm with you! I think I didn't compose my post carefuly enough. The laughing was when the arse on the Jetski totals himself against the side of a solid yacht - and the idea that we would then have to rescue him. Sorry, but its like the intruder I find in my house in the middle of the night - so far as I am concerned he has taken a conscious decision to opt out of the rules of the game and my interpretation of reasonable force is enough to make absolutely certain he doesn't get up and have another go. If a jetskier has decided to amuse himself making a monkey out of me so be it, but I would raise not a finger to help him out in the scenario above.

ah but you would because you know you could not leave him to drown!

That is society init, the normal people do everything to assist the idiots only to get sand kicked in their faces.

You would pick him up because you are not a plonker?

Sorry to bring this up, but it's true!

OK, but at least let me be Paul Kersey for a while in my misanthropic dreams (and yes, I did have to look that up!).

Re: Jet Ski\'s again !!

It just comes down to the same thing again and again doesn't it. An ars**ole is an ars**ole is an ars**ole.

It doesn't matter if he (it's usually he, but not always) is a jetskier buzzing us, a stinkpotter who does 10kts through a quite anchorage, just off the plane, because that's the speed limit, a raggie who insists on his right to tack up a narrow channel full of other boats, or a fisherman who uses a wire rope to attach his coke-bottle float to his lobster pot.

It's mostly ignorance, but unfortunately there's none as thick as those who won't be taught.

Re: Suspended

"at about 1.3m above water level between 2 points a rope could prove a very salutory lesson. I'd suggest monofilament as being less obtrusive and more efficient. "

No, no, no not good enough - stainless wire, like piano wire or cheese wire - very strong and almost invisible when the plonker is travelling at high speeds.

Jetskis

I'm new to the forum but have been (heavily) boating for 4-5 years now. My parents own a Broom 35 and I am the chuffed owner of a small 'speed' boat. Don't worry, I only have a 6hp. I have seen a number of jetskis in my time. I have been on two, driven one, and have drove two speedboats too. I found that a MAJORITY of them can be quite friendly. I have witnessed a site that I know some of you might kill for. I was just cruising in my boat out of a small open harbour on the river. it's just beside a little lake. Anyway, this guy and his friend were flying by me trying (too hard) to impress me. He went out too wide and I saw the two riders leap off. Then I saw the jetski fly up into the air after hitting a large rock sticking out of the water and bounce off the bank wall. It was a brand spankin' new sea-doo, I had seen one very similar for £14,000 at the boat show about a month before-hand. they swam over and got it started again and slowly crept off back to the slipway.

Not all same ...

I have seen very responsible Jet Ski riders - but unfortunately I seem to see more idiots than good.

I am first to say that another should be able to enjoy whatever sport / vehicle they care for - as long as they respect others.

It is the few idiots that will spoil it for the many ..... sad but true.

ColinS - I really feel for you good guys and hope that the 'tar' washes off easily.

Waving back ...

The style of wave back that you want to really do ..... only eggs 'em on - because one of their kicks is to upset you !! They feel they are making an 'impact'.

I prefer the wave that accompanys a 4" shell personally or a well aimed 'rock' .....

Re: Waving back ...

We have a simple and very effective way of putting jetskiers off performing near our anchored boat. Just totally ignore them. I know, it sounds a useless approach, but as nigel says, if you wave or even look interested or annoyed, the vast majority just come closer and stay around longer.

There are loads of the things in the med, and we make a specific point of looking the other way and not in any way acknowledging their presence. Out the corner of your eye, you can see them looking to see our reaction, and when they see that we don't even 'know they're there', they pass a couple more times but ALWAYS push off and pester someone else thereafter!!

Sorry if it's any of you Forumites, but we like our G and T's in peace and comfort!

Try it next time, I think you'll be surprised at it's effectiveness!

Re: Waving back ...

In fact, my experience in the Med, is that:-

a) there are fewer jetskis than there were.
b) most of them are to be found in the W Med, usually round the already-despoiled Costas.
c) they seem to be far less aggressive than those found around the UK coasts.
d) they're usually ridden by N European yobbos (for that read Brits and Deutsche).

In line with Darwin's 3rd - leave it to natural selection to terminate the "jetski-misbehaviour gene"
