Jet ski-ing Dangers

I have just returned from staying at the Knoll House Hotel overlooking Studland Bay. During the past ten days there were numerous PWCs and MoBos, the only complaint I could make would be the early start some of the water skiers made one fine morning when I was out for my early morning swim, about 07:30 on a Sunday morning. Other than that I must say they were all well behaved and apparently responsible. Apart from the chap who clearly messed up on the tide times and was beached for a couple of hours, tee hee.

I think it's a little unfair to accuse pwc's of 2-stoke leoprocy?
I would guess that 95% of all outboards are oil burners.

As for noise pollution...My old lake club was getting complaints about the ski noise over 2 months after the club had shut down... "NIMBY" spings to mind...except it's water born predujice here...
You hear a PWC (NOT JET-SKI as they keep being described as) and immediatly start looking for reasons to critisis it's behaviour.. and rubbing you hands with glee when it does something wrong... we could all sit on the bank watching cruisers and yaughts making fundimental mistakes, but what's the point?...unless you have no life...

Why on earth do Jet skiers get so worried about their machines being called "Jet Skis" rather than "PWC". I know that "Jet ski" is a brand name (Kawasaki?) but so what?

It's no different from describing a vacuum cleaner as a "Hoover", or a computer a "PC" or any of the other generics which have been part of everday life for as long as we can remember.

I use the expression "Jet Ski" because the majority of people know what I am talking about. If I started talking about "PWC's" they wouldn't know what I meant.

So, "Jet Ski" it is and "Jet Ski" it will remain.

RUBBISH RUBBISH AND MORE RUBBISH! (This is a family board so you can add your preferred adjectives)

My dislike of 'Jetskis' - and the people who use them refer to them as such as well as using the term 'PWC' - is based entirely and directly on the number of occasions when I have been:

a: 'buzzed' - used as a target for dangerous and stupid manoevers - like playing chicken across my bows.

b: having my cockpit deliberately swamped on two recent
occasions by PWC's doing deliberate racing turns in to me.

c: the INFERNAL noise they make,

and d: the fact that all but a tiny minority have a total disregard for the safety of other water users, including ignoring speed limits, operating at high speed among swimmers and children in or on the water, and COMPLETE disregard for Colregs or any of the basic water safety rules.

Someone in this thread described their presence as being like having a load of youngsters on motorbikes tearing round a crowded family picnic place. They are absolutely right.

How many MORE people have to be killed or maimed?

Apart from the noise they made, I used not to have any problem with people enjoying their PWCs - but this sort of behaviour occurs virtually EVERY time I see them operating anywhere. I dont have to look for reasons to criticise their behaviour - they hand it to us on a plate.

I appreciate that, when writing press releases for the club I always mention 'JetSki' as that is what the general public know them as.

But the correct term is PWC, a JetSki apart from being a Kawasaki is also believed by many to be a stand-up PWC rather than the sitdown ski, but who cares, JetSki, JetBike, Water Scooter, PWC we all know what one another means. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As you can't answer the question, I'll tell you my theory. Jet skiers have had a lousy reputation for years now and some bright spark has decided that if they rebrand themselves as "PWC users" then they will somehow become more respectable. I can see no other reason for them going on about it all the time.

Sadly, I suspect that it's another case of "change the name, and do the same". /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

As Neil said above, "JET SKI" refers to the original Kwak stand up.. how can you compare one of those to a 3 seater SEADOO with a 60 mile range, gps, depth finder and it's only reson for not being called a Jetboat is that it does not have a steering wheel or windshield? A serious response to your points!

I think that the responses you have been getting here simply highlight the depth of feeling that many have about Jet Skis.

To be honest I think that you would be better off trying to get support for your sport than argueing with other boaters. You should be arguing with the irresponsible users who are causing the problems which you are experiencing.

I think we are all getting hung up on issues that really don't matter:

Majority/minority

PWC, JetSki, Jet Bike, Sea Scooter, Jet Powered Boat

What I want to see is these idiots taken off the water, and the only way I can see that happening is to have the wider boating community including PWC users work together to identify the problem users and report them and follow those reports up to check the authorities have done something about it.

Now: inciting them to attack me. I was entering harbour late evening. Not much else around. Jetski appears heading straight for me on collision course from port side. I alter course to make room - he alters course to stay on collision heading. I resume course to avoid him, he alters course again straight for me, making last minute turn so that his wash swamps me. Second episode six weeks later, very similar - completely unprovoked.

It was my first visit to that harbour this season.

Incitement on my part? . Please explain if you think I did anything to upset him - because he b+++++ well upset me!

Harbour Master at home HAS banned them. Harbour Master where this happened SAYS he will do something, but doesnt. Though I am told he has prosecuted one or two. He knows who the hoodlums are, but prefers to take their launch money. The only redeeming feature being that he charges more for Jetskis than any other boat being launched....

Didnt stop me getting wet...

PS for Keith b+++++ = blumin (what did you think it meant!), so dont pull the string for bad language - please!
